Watford vs Aston Villa

SAT 14 AUG 2021 – KO 15:00

Watford Vs

Watford’s first game back in the Premier League is a home match against the side who just beat them to survival in 2019, Aston Villa.

Spending just one season in the Championship is Watford. They came straight back up after relegation, finishing second, behind Norwich.  Vicarage Road will be electric on the opening day of the season and Watford would love to give their fan something to cheer about.

For Watford, this season is going to be all about survival. They will want to try and find some sort of balance and won’t want to be moving up and down leagues consistently. Watford have in their favour, the fact that they have spent lots of seasons recently in the top flight and their side is full of experienced players.

Danny Orse and Josh King have joined Watford, who will both strengthen the side. Against Aston Villa, they could both make their debuts in a game we expect the home side to not see a lot of the ball. However, Watford do have a lot of pace in their squad and this could be the way they hurt Aston Villa.

Dean Smith’s side had a much improved season last year, finishing 11th in the table as opposed to 17th the year before. They may have finished even higher had Jack Grealish not picked up an injury that ruled him out for the back end of the season.

Villa will be full of confidence and will want to try and push for a European spot this season. that is a big ask but at one point in 20/21 it looked like it was on! A good run in a cup competition will be one of their aims for the new season.

Buendia has joined Villa from Norwich who is a very exciting signing. If they can keep hold of Grealish it’ll be a fantastic summer. They will be going into this one expecting to win, but Watford aren’t a poor side and Villa will need to hit the ground running.
