Wales vs Switzerland

SAT 12 JUNE 2021 – KO 14:00

Wales vs

The second game of Euro 2021 is Wales vs Switzerland at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan. Switzerland are the favourites for this one, however, Wales have quality players that can cause any team problems on the day.

This will be the second time Wales have made it to the European championship finals. Their previous appearance came in 2016 when they exceeded everyone’s expectations by reaching the semi-finals!

In 2016, Wales were drawn into a group with England, Russia and Slovakia. Despite losing to England, they still finished top of their group with two wins. Wales then beat Northern Ireland 1-0 which set up a game against the talented Belgian team. Wales, captained by Gareth Bale put on a fantastic performance and came away 3-1 winners. Unfortunately, their luck ran out when they were beaten 2-0 in the semi-finals by Portugal.

Wales are currently ranked 18th in the world and have some fantastic players to call upon. The star of the squad is three-time Champions League winner Gareth Bale. They also have Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey, Spurs’ Ben Davies and Man United’s Dan James.

I expect Wales to take a defensive approach in this opener whilst looking to use the pace of Bale and James to cause problems on the counter-attack.

The 2020 European Championship will be the fifth time Switzerland have qualified for the competition. Their best-ever finish, like Wales, came in 2016, with Switzerland getting to the Round of 16.

At the last Euro’s, Switzerland was drawn in a group with France, Albania and Romania. They finished second in the group as expected. However, their competition ended in the next round when they were knocked out by Poland.

Switzerland doesn’t have a squad capable of winning the tournament, but they have some decent players. Captain of the national team and Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka as well as Liverpool Xherdan Shaqiri to name a couple. Along with Dormtunds Akanji and Monchegladbachs goalkeeper Yan Sommer.

The Rossocrociati are the favourites for this game and they’re a tough side to break down. I can see the Swiss edging this tight game against Wales.

Team News

Squad selection and specific team news will be available closer to the tournament.

Match Prediction

This will be a close game between two fairly evenly matched teams. However, we feel due to Switzerland’s greater squad depth and more impact coming off the bench, we are backing the to get off to a winning start in Euro 2020.
