BETTING & MATCH PREVIEW
It’s Turkey vs Italy in the opening game of Euros, the game will take place in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Italians will be strong favourites to win the first game of the tournament. However, Turkey will be looking to upset the form book and come away from the game with at least a point.
This will be the fifth time that Turkey has taken part in the European Championships. They’ve never won the competition but did reach the semi-finals in 2008. They were beaten by Germany.
In 2016, Turkey didn’t make it to the knockout stages of the tournament after being drawn into a tough group that included Spain. This year, they’ll face Italy, Wales and Switzerland, another tough round of games.
The Turks current list of players isn’t the strongest. However, it does boast some well-known names in world football. AC Milan’s Calhanoglu and Juventus’ Demiral along with forgotten striker Tosun from Everton.
The side managed by Senol Gunes will be looking to grab a point in their first game. Italy will be a very tough test but if they can come away with a point it will be a great result.
The 2012 European Championship runners-up play their first game of this years competition at home, a huge advantage for the Azzurri. Their only tournament win came in 1968 and since then they have been runners up twice.
At the last Euro’s, Italy made it to the quarter-finals but they were beaten on penalties by Germany. Getting out of the group stage this year will be the minimum expected of this side.
Italy has a fantastic squad of players, one of the strongest in the competition. Players such as Jorghinho, Florenzi, Insigne, Donnarumma to name but a few. None of these players has won an international tournament with their country and would love to see them triumph in 2021.
The game against Turkey will be one they’re expected to win. Italy plays a fantastic style of football and will dominate the ball for the vast majority of the game. Italy has played Turkey a total of 11 times in their history, winning eight of them and drawing the remaining three.
At their national stadium, hopefully, in front of home fans, they will be confident of getting off to a perfect start.
Squad selection and specific team news will be available closer to the tournament.
