What Do the Home Nations Need To Qualify For Euro 2020?

Azerbaijan v Wales November 2019

Out of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, only Southgates side have qualified, but what do the others need to get to Euro 2020?

An emphatic 7-0 win booked England’s place at next summers Euro 2020. By doing so they made themselves the only Home Nations side to be there. England has finished their qualifying campaign, but the four other teams all have one game left. The Three Lions have joined 16 other teams including Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal and The Netherlands in qualification. England finished at the top of Group A with 21/24 points and have a goal difference of +31! They are now joint-favourites to win the Euros, for their first time ever, with France at 9/2 on Betfred.

Northern Ireland are in Group C and can only qualify through the playoffs that start next March. They were unlucky in being drawn in the same group as Germany and The Netherlands who have finished 1st and 2nd. Michael O’Neill’s drew 0-0 with The Netherlands on the weekend and had they of won then they could still have qualified through the group stages. They are at a huge 400/1 on Betfred to win next summers tournament.

The Republic of Ireland, unlike Northern Ireland, can still qualify through the groups. They take on Denmark on Tuesday night where a win will see them through. When these two sides met earlier in the group stages, they drew 0-0. Betfair has Denmark as the favourites for this one at 13/10 with The Republic of Ireland at 9/4. Should they win and get through they are currently at 150/1 to win the whole tournament.

Wales are in a similar situation to Ireland. A win on Tuesday against Hungary would see them go through in a winner takes all game. Should this end a draw though this would allow for Slovakia to sneak through. Wales lost to Hungary 1-0 but are the 7/10 favourites for this game. They are the favourites to win the Euros out of all the Home Nation sides still to qualify at 100/1.

Finally, we have Scotland, who unlike any of the other sides, can only qualify through next years playoffs. They are in the same group as Russia and Belgium, who have both already done enough to qualify. It looks like it’s going to be tough for Scotland to qualify next year and even tougher at 500/1 to win the tournament.
