We’re going to take a look at the top league in Europe and which teams are the best at shutting out the opposition and keeping a clean sheet!
If you can keep a clean sheet in a match then you are half way to winning. This is why nowadays keepers are going for far more than we are used to seeing. Last season the transfer record for a goalkeeper was broken TWICE in one summer. Alisson moved to Liverpool from Roma for €75 million and then Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for €80 million.
Knowing that a team has a high chance of keeping a clean sheet can help a lot when it comes to betting. Certain betting markets rely on teams keeping clean sheets or not. For example, both teams to score markets. If you know a team has goalkeeper and defence who keep clean sheets more often than not it can help you choose yes or no in this market.
It’s also useful for in over/under goals. In these bets, you bet whether the game will have over or under a certain amount of goals. If a team has a solid defence the likelihood is there will be fewer goals, especially if both teams have solid defences.
Teams with most clean sheets
Liverpool had the most amount of clean sheets last season, as well as the highest percentage in Europes top five leagues. Alisson managed 21 clean sheets in 38 games. This was also down to the defence he had in front of him. For the whole of last season, not one player managed to dribble past Van Dijk. Liverpool you would expect will keep a solid amount of clean sheets next season. Out of 20 games against teams in the bottom half of the table, Liverpool didn’t concede in 13 of them. This shows they are good for a BTTS market when against the lower sides.
Sheffield United played in the Championship last season but are going up to the Premier League. Their goalkeeper Dean Henderson is on loan from Man United but he wants to go back on loan this season. Sheffield United managed to keep a clean sheet in 21/46 games last season. Even though they are going into a far tougher league, when they are playing teams close to them keeping a clean sheet could be a good bet.
Top of the Premier League but third in the clean sheets table is Man City. Ederson didn’t concede in 20/38 games. Only one game behind Liverpool and still a fantastic record. City this season have lost Kompany but are looking for another centre half. They like to keep the ball a lot so this is also another reason why they don’t concede. Against sides in the top ten, City managed 11 clean sheets showing they can do it against all the teams, not just the struggling ones.
The first team not in England is Atletico Madrid. At one point in his career for the Spanish side, Jan Oblak had more clean sheets than goals conceded. Last year he managed 20/37 in La Liga. Oblak has been one of the best keepers in the world for the past few years now. Unfortunately, like Man City, they are losing one of their main defenders in Diego Godin. Atletico though still have a good defence and with Oblak, in goal, it’s still going to be hard for sides to put goals past them.
Inter Milan seem to be on their way back and this is partly down to their solid defence. Samir Handanovic has been at the club since 2012 and has been brilliant since joining. Last year he didn’t concede in 17 out of their 38 league games. The Serie A is a tough league with any of the sides able to score against each other.
Picking both teams to score can be very hard and all it takes is one mistake or a worldie and you’ve conceded. But if you know who are the teams most likely to keep clean sheets it makes it that bit easier.
