Two big results for Bayern Munich this week have put them seven-point clears at the top and are surely on their way to another title!
With the Bundesliga being the only league currently going, everyone is watching, and it hasn’t disappointed. When it first restarted two weeks ago, just five points separated the top three. Bayern was leading the way with Dortmund four behind and Leipzig five behind.
With eight games to go and some big ones to be played, it was all to play for. However, since then, things couldn’t have gone much better for Bayern. They are now seven points clear of Dortmund and ten of Leipzig. It would take a monumental slip up now for them to not land their eighth Bundesliga in a row.
On Tuesday, Dortmund hosted Bayern in the Der Klassiker. This was a huge game for deciding how the season would end up. Dortmund new nothing but a win here would be good enough. Both sides were coming into the game in great form, having won their last two since the leagues restarted.
Both sides started strong 11’s, except for Sancho missing from the Dortmund line up once again. With no fans in the crowd, this would be a very unusual Der Klassiker, as its usually rocking when these two meet!
Dortmund had a great chance from the first whistle. A ball through the Bayern defence saw sweeper-keeper Neuer coming out again. He could only pass it to Haaland though who had his effort cleared off the line by Boateng. The hosts carried on this bright start, and have another good effort just minutes later.
On the 20th minute, Dortmund’s defence was called into action when they had to clear Gnabry’s effort off the line. Bayern broke the deadlock on the 42nd minute through Joshua Kimmich. The defensive midfielder picked the ball up on the edge of the box and lobbed Burki into the far left corner.
Dortmund will have felt hard done by not to have had a penalty in the second half. Haaland’s shot being deflected for a corner by the back of Boateng’s arm. Bayern was unlucky not to double their lead in the 82nd minute. Lewandowski’s left-footed effort crashing off the post.
The game finished 1-0 to Bayern who then opened up a seven-point gap of rivals Dortmund. Bayern are now priced at 1/100 to go on and win the league, with Dortmund at 33/1.
Leipzig Lose More Ground
The other team in the title race were beaten last week and needed to win to ensure they were slightly still in the race. They took on Hertha Berlin and got off to the worst start when Liverpool loanee Marco Grujic scored in the 9th minute.
Leipzig though responded well and scored through defender Klostermann in the 22nd minute. However, this wasn’t a perfect performance from the hosts. They were reduced to ten men in the 63rd minute when Halstenberg was given a second yellow.
The hosts were up against it now but took the lead just five minutes after the dismissal. Schick getting the goal from outside the box thanks to a fumble from the keeper. However, Hertha weren’t done there. Piatek converted a penalty in the 82nd minute and the game ended 2-2.
Leipzig are now ten points behind Bayern and will be focusing on staying in the Champions League places as opposed to winning the league. Paddy Power now have them priced at 100/1 to win the league.
It’s going to be a tough weekend for the teams at the bottom. Paderborn are bottom and take on Dortmund. The hosts are priced at 1/50 to go down this season and this Saturday should see Dortmund bagging themselves a few goals.
Werder Bremen are six points ahead of Paderborn and take on eighth place Schalke this weekend. Werder are 1/4 to go down but are only five points away from safety. This could be turned around but Schalke will be a tough game.
Dusseldorf are playing Bayern on Saturday and they are EVS to get relegated from the Bundesliga. Bayern will be full of confidence and now they are ten points clear, will want to make sure that its business, as usual, this weekend.
