Football fans around the world rejoice as the European Super League has fallen apart already!

At the weekend it broke that 12 clubs, including the “Big Six” from England, were breaking away to form the European Super League. This would come as a direct replacement to the Champions League and overall it meant far more money for those involved.

Many footballing fans across the world were outraged by this, calling for those involved to be kicked out of their respective leagues. Since the announcement fans, pundits, managers and even MPs have spoken out against the idea that could have ruined football as we know it.

Yesterday though, the news everyone was wanted arrived and perhaps a little faster than expected. One by one, the English clubs announced that after two days of thinking they would each withdraw from the competition.

Obviously, this has gone down well with all fans, not just those whose clubs were initially part of it. However, clubs are now calling for the “Big Six” to be punished in some way to stop them from doing this ever again.

It remains to be seen what the punishment will be. Wholesale changes at these clubs are expected now and it has already started at Man United. Ed Woodward has stood down as executive vice-chairman of the club, much to the delight of the fans. This will be one of many changes in the long run, that will better the game as we know it!

European Super League Aftermath Specials

All twelve clubs to have withdrawn from the European Super League before midnight April 21st 2021 – 5/6

As it stands, there are three clubs left in the European Super League, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. Reals president Florentino Perez is the chairman of the breakaway league and way very vocal in saying how he wants it to go ahead. However, they have a Champions League semi-final next week and won’t want to risk being kicked out. With nine other teams leaving already, surely it’s a matter of time before these three follow.

Florentino Perez to step down as Real Madrid president before the 1st of May 2021 – 7/4

The Real Madrid president was spearheading the campaign for the new league. A lot of it though comes down to money. Real Madrid needs heavy reinvestment into their ageing squad and this was seen as the way to do it. Perez is now 74 and in his second term as the club’s president. With the European Super League failing is it now time for Perez to step aside, especially with UEFA now not on his side?

The Glazer family to sell their majority stake in Man Utd before the end of 2021 – 13/2

This is something that all United fans are desperate for. The Glazers bought the club back in 2005 with money they didn’t have, thus putting the club straight into £500 million debt, with incredibly high interests. Since then there has been much anger towards the owners and now might be the time to sell up. Woodward is leaving at the end of 2021 also and with this withdrawal from the Super League, it shows the owners don’t have as much control as they think!
