Pukki Taking Premier League By Storm
This time last season the Finnish striker was known by very few but now goal keepers all over the country have heard of Teemu Pukki.
After a brilliant start to life in the Premier League, Pukki has now been nominated for Player Of The Month. He joins a star-studded line up which includes Aguero, Firmino, Barnes, Sterling and De Bruyne. Pukki has already won the PFA Fans Player of the Month, so a Premier League one could well be on the way. Should he win it he will be the first Norwich player ever to do so.
Some fans may remember his name from his time in Scotland when he played for Celtic. Unfortunately for him he didn’t have the best of times in the Scottish Premier League and lasted just one season. In 26 league games, he managed seven goals. This saw the club get rid of him, with Pukki himself saying the league was a lot harder than expected.
The finish striker joined The Canaries last season with a fairly small reputation. He had been released by Danish side Brondy after a four-year spell where he had scored 55 league goals in 130 games. This isn’t the worst return for a striker, but it was being unable to agree on a new contract that saw the striker leave for free.
For some reason it all seemed to fall into place for him at Norwich. He got off to a great start and had five goals by the end of September. Pukki’s fine form continued, and he managed to get himself 29 league goals in the whole season. This kind of goalscoring form saw him finish top scorer and his side finish top of the Championship.
Premier League 2019/20
The start of this season has been even better for him. He has got himself five goals by the end of August, which included one against Liverpool and Chelsea and three against Newcastle. This is a great start, especially managing to score against some of the world class defenders and keepers that Liverpool and Chelsea have.
His five goals this season so far see’s him second in the top goal scorers table. Only Aguero has more than him with six goals. He is currently averaging a goal every 73 minutes which is a ridiculous record. In terms of shots on target percentage, only Raheem Sterling is more accurate than him with 88% compared to his 85%.
Should Pukki be able to carry this on this season who knows where Norwich will end up! He is currently 20/1 on Betfred to finish the top scorer this season, with the two mean either side of him, Aguero (7/2) and Sterling (11/2) at much shorter odds. But winning the golden boot won’t be Pukki or Norwichs main aim. They will both want Premier League survival and Betfred currently have them priced at 1/2 to stay in Englands top division.
