The 2019/20 Premier League season finished yesterday and were going to round up the season, who finished where and who came out on top
After 352 days, the most unusual Premier League season to date was finally finished yesterday. At one point it looked like the season wasn’t going to be finished after it took a 100-day long break. Football then returned but without fans. This wasn’t the ideal situation, however, it was better than it not returning at all.
Whether it is for good or bad reasons, no one will ever forget this season. We had a team end a 30-year long wait for a Premier League title, another side drop out the top four on the final day after over 300 days in there and teams who looked Championship bound survive after a VAR fail.
With the Premier League running longer this season, it has pushed back the 20/21 season. Next seasons campaign is set to start on September 12th. Between now and then though shortened down versions of the Champions League and Europa League are still to be played.
Champions
Liverpool were crowned champions of the Premier League for the first time in their history this season. This ended a 30-year long wait for a league title at Anfield. Liverpool had a great season and finished with 99 points. At one stage it looked like they were going to go unbeaten, however, Watford ended this by beating them 3-0.
Klopp’s side finished 18 points clear of Man City, who were actually one point ahead of Liverpool last year. They have been one of the best sides ever to win the league and will be the team to beat next season. Liverpool are priced at 15/8 at retain the title next year.
Champions League Places
The race for the Champions League was a fantastic one. Liverpool and Man City were nailed on for it with Wolves, Man United, Chelsea and Leicester fighting it out for the last two places. Leicester should have definitely got there, considering they were 14 points clear of Man United at one point.
With yesterdays games being Leicester vs Man United and Chelsea vs Wolves, it was set to be an exciting last day. Man United came away 2-0 winners over Leicester and Chelsea the same against Wolves. Solskjaers side finished third with Chelsea in fourth. Unfortunately for Leicester, after 312 consecutive days in the top four they finished in fifth place.
These four sides are favourite to finish in the top four again next season. Spurs are the most likely to break into it according to Paddy Power at 3/1.
Europa League Places
Leicester finished in fifth place with Spurs in sixth. Due to City winning the Carabao Cup and already being qualified for the Europa League, it meant these two sides are guaranteed to play in the competition next season.
The final Europa League place will go down to this Saturdays FA Cup final. If Arsenal, who finished in 8th place, win then they will get in the Europa League. If Chelsea wins, who are already in the Champions League, then Wolves, in seventh place, will play in the Europa League.
Relegation
Norwich have gone straight back down to the Championship after one year in the Premier League. They struggled a lot and were relegated several weeks ago and finished on 21 points, 14 clear of 17th place.
Joining Norwich in the Championship next season are Watford and Bournemouth. Both sides wouldn’t have been favourites to go down at the start of the season. Aston Villa looked destined for the drop but going unbeaten in their last four games saw them survive by a point.
Top Scorer
For the first time ever, Jame Vardy has managed to land himself a Golden Boot. The Leicester frontman is 33 years of age but is playing like a 23-year-old. He doesn’t seem to be struggling at all and his 23 goals this season proved it. Ings and Aubameyang finished behind him by just one goal. Vardy broke another record this year by being the oldest winner of the Golden Boot in Premier League history.
