Pep Retains Man City’s Title

Man City win the Premier League for the fourth time as it goes down to the final game of the season against Brighton!

The Premier League went down to the final day for the eighth time since it started in 1992. City went into the final day as favourites to lift the trophy. They were one point ahead of Liverpool and had a better goal difference than Klopp’s side. Liverpool were hoping to win their first ever Premier League trophy and a first league title in 29 years. City had won the league the season before and were hoping to win it again for the fourth time.

Pep’s side were away to Brighton. The hosts had confirmed safety the week before when Cardiff lost to Crystal Palace. City had already beaten Brighton twice this season, once in the league and once in the FA Cup. Brighton’s last win came against Huddersfield on March 2nd. Liverpool were at home to Wolves. Klopp’s team have already beaten Wolves in the league but Wolves had also beaten them in the FA Cup. The visitors had a fantastic away record against the top six before yesterday. They had only lost once to Man City, drawing with Spurs, Chelsea, United and Arsenal.

The Title Race

15:00 – Both games kicked off and as it stood Man City would win the league by a point.

15:17 – The title race had swapped hands again. Liverpool had opened the scoring through Mane. Alexander-Arnold getting his twelfth assist of the season and setting a record for the most ever in a Premier Leauge season by a defender. Liverpool was now one point ahead of Man City, but there was still a long way to go.

15:26 – A huge twist in the title race. The unthinkable had happened at the Amex Stadium. Glen Murray had given Liverpool hope after managing to head in from a corner at the front post. City fans were worried that they may have fallen at the final hurdle, the gap was now two points.

15:28 – Another big game another Aguero goal. City’s main man had pulled one back for them. Brighton’s lead lasted just 83 seconds. Silva flicked a ball through to Aguero who poked it through Matt Ryan’s legs. Liverpool was still top by one point.

15:38 – Heartbreak for Liverpool. City had now taken the lead through centre-back Aymeric Laporte. A corner from Mahrez was met by an unchallenged Laporte who headed the ball down and into the net. Pep was now back on top by a point.

15:47 – Half time in both games. Liverpool was in control but needed a huge favour from Brighton. They hadn’t scored twice at home since December 4th.

16:21 – The last thing Liverpool wanted. Riyad Mahrez finishing superbly from the edge of the box. Sending Brighton defenders one way before cutting onto his right foot and putting it in the top corner.

16:29 – Title race over. City had won a free-kick 25 yards out from goal. Midfielder Gundogan stepped up and got the ball up and over the wall into the net. Brighton was not about to recover this and it was just waiting for the final whistle now.

16:38 – One last thing for the Anfield crowd to cheer about this season. Another Mane goal, another Alexander-Arnold assist. A ball in from deep that found the head of Mane. A 22nd-second goal of the season and one that would put him, joint top scorer, with Aubameyang and Salah.

16:49 – Party time. The whistle had gone at Brighton and City were confirmed Premier League Champions 18/19.

This was to be City’s sixth league title in their history. They have now won the Premier League four times, all coming in the last eight years. They are the first side to win back to back Premier League titles since Man United a decade ago. City finished the season on 98 points, only once has a team finished with more which was Man City last year on 100.

Liverpool will feel like they couldn’t have done much more. They finished on 97 points which is 22 more than last season. 97 points would have seen Liverpool win the Premier League in every single season except for this year and last year. They are also the only team in English top division history to only lose one game and not win the league. The 29 year wait for a title goes on as well as the hunt for their first Premier League trophy.

Salah, Aubameyang and Mane all finished on 22 goals. This meant the three of them shared the golden boot award and it was Salah’s second after winning it last year with 32 goals.
