Everton have finally called it a day on Marco Silva’s time at the club after his side were thrashed 5-2 in the Merseyside derby!

It appeared last month it was simply a matter of time before Marco Silva was given the sack. The Portuguese manager was under pressure since the end of November when he had emergency talks with the owner. After losing their last two games, the derby on Wednesday night was huge.

It couldn’t have gone much worse for Silva and his team. By half time they were 4-2 down and this was a Liverpool side without five first-team players in. The game finished 5-2 and this was Everton’s eight defeat in just 11 games!

The owner Mashiri was at Finch Farm on Thursday afternoon. He, along with the rest of the board, met with Silva to deliver the news. He joined the club at the end of the 17/18 season and was thought to be the man to finally take Everton to the next level. However, after a poor start to the 19/20 campaign and his side in 17th place, it was time for him to go.

Who’s Going To Be In Charge Next?

Now Everton legend Duncan Ferguson is going to be in charge for the Chelsea game at least, it gives the board time to look for the right appointment. This needs to be a decision that isn’t rushed as before Everton know it they could well be in a relegation battle.

David Moyes is the current favourite on Paddy Power at 13/10. The Scot managed the club for 11 years before leaving for Man United. He had his best years as a manager at the club and has a good relationship with the board. It is rumoured he will bring in Tim Cahill as his assistant which will go down well with the fans. Whether this is the right appointment to move the club forward remains to be seen but he would get them out of the bottom 3.

Another name being spoken about is Vitor Pereira. Like Silva, he is Portuguese and has had good spells in their home country. Paddy Power has him just behind Moyes at 6/4. He is currently the manager at Shanghai SIPG and has had spells at Olympiakos, Fenerbache and Porto. Pereira is relatively unknown to Premier League fans but it could be a better appointment than going for one off the obvious managerial merry-go-round.

Eddie Howe is another name being thrown about. At 9/1 he is an outsider but would be a good appointment. He has guided Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League. Everton is a bigger club than the Cherries but he could hold out and maybe even get a job somewhere bigger. It will be tough to get him out of Bournemouth but it would be a great appointment.

You can look at possible appointments and not mention Mikel Arteta. Another ex-player who is currently the assistant to Pep Guardiola at Man City. It was rumoured he could go to Arsenal and you would expect him to go there over Everton. However, he hasn’t actually got any experience of being a manager and it could be too much of a gamble for Arsenal. At 12/1 it’s a big punt but one you could see happening!
