Luis Enrique Re-Appointed As Spain Manager

Luis Enrique

Five months after stepping down from the manager’s role for personal reasons, Luis Enrique has now been re-appointed as the Spain manager in time for Euro 2020.

Luis Enrique was initially put in charge of the national team back in 2018. He was given the role after a turbulent summer for Spain at the World Cup. The night before the opening ceremony, Julen Lopetegui was sacked after it came out he had already accepted the Real Madrid job for after the competition.

Enrique’s time as manager though unfortunately didn’t last long. His nine-year-old daughter, Xana, became ill with bone cancer and as a result, Enrique stepped won. This then sadly lead to the death of his daughter which shook the footballing world.

With Enrique not in charge, his assistant Roberto Moreno took charge. The two had worked together at three different clubs, including Barcelona. This was where Enrique had his most successful time as a manager. He guided them to two La Liga titles and one Champions League.

Enrique returns

It was made clear by both the Spanish FA and Moreno that should Enrique want to return, no one would stand in his way. After confirming their attendance at Euro 2020 the Spanish FA heald a press conference. Here they would announce that Enrique would be returning to manage the national side until the 2022 World Cup at least.

Sadly though for Enrique, this would be without his assistant Moreno. He was said to be annoyed at the Spanish FA for not keeping him informed and is taking a break.

Spain will be hoping Enrique can bring back the glory days of 2008-2012. In this period Spain managed to win two European Championships and the World Cup. Spain isn’t the force they once were and are one of the outsiders for Euro 2020. Betfred has them priced at 8/1 for Enrique to guide them to their first trophy since 2012.
