Chelsea picked up another trophy last night, winning the Super Cup against Villarreal with Kepa coming off the bench to win the game!
Last night Chelsea took on Villarreal at Windsor Park in Belfast in the Super Cup Final. Chelsea got there by beating Man City 1-0 in the final of the Champions League, whilst Villarreal beat Man United on penalties in the Europa League final.
Chelsea have been to five Super Cup finals in their history, winning two of them. Their last final was in 2019, when they were beaten on penalties by Liverpool.
This was Villarreals first-ever Super Cup final, having never won a European trophy before this year.
It was a big game for both sides, with Tuchel taking Chelsea to their third final since joining in January and having the chance to win his second trophy.
Kepa The Hero As Chelsea Win The Super Cup
Chelsea started the better of the two sides with Kante going close early on. They broke the deadlock on the 26th minute, Hakim Ziyech getting on the end of a cross from Havertz and guiding it into the net.
Villarreal grew into the game and ex-Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno nearly equalised late into the first half. His volley on the edge of the six-yard back crashing off the crossbar and going back out to safety. Villareal nearly got back into the game five minutes into the second half with Gerard Moreno hitting the post after a poor goal kick from Mendy.
The Spanish side kept pushing and were forcing Mendy into making some good saves. They finall got one back in the 72nd minute through their striker Moreno. The forward picked up the ball on the edge of the box and after a quick one-two, placed it into the top left corner giving the keeper no chance.
The game went to extra time and for the remaining 30 minutes, it was a very close affair. Chelsea made a few subs and one of which was Kepa. He refused to come off in the Carabao Cup final in 2019 and was now coming on to replace Mendy, a change that was tactical.
It paid off though for Chelsea and Kepa would go on to save two penalties in the shootout and win Tuchel his second trophy at the London club! It was a huge call by the German manager but one that played out to be a very good one and even better when Mendy was the first play to celebrate with Kepa after his save!
