Huge Results In Champions League For City And Chelsea

A famous win for Man City at The Bernabeu looks to have sent them through whilst Chelsea are left with it all to do at the Allianz in the Champions League!

This week the remaining two English sides in the Champions League played their first legs of the Round Of 16. Both sides had fantastic games to play with Chelsea hosting Bayern Munich and Man City visiting Real Madrid.

After last week’s results, both these sides were looking to do the Premier League proud and try and pick up a first-leg lead. City were the favourites for their game with Chelsea the underdogs, even after picking up a big win against Spurs on Saturday.

Chelsea vs Bayern Munich

A replay of the 2012 Champions League final saw Chelsea take on Bayern in the Round Of 16. Going into this Chelsea could have done with a Drogba or a Lampard in their team to stand a chance of winning. Bayern, who are top of the Bundesliga, were expected to come away from this tie with a draw at least.

Bayern was on top for the first half with Muller running the show. He came close several times, even nearly scoring off the back of his head. Chelsea themselves did have a few good chances but thanks to crossbar they went in 0-0 at half time.

In the second half though a different Bayern came out. Gnabry broke the deadlock on the 50th minute when Lewandowski squared it for him to smash into an empty net. Bayern doubled their lead four minutes later through Gnabry again. A fantastic finish on his weaker left foot into the bottom right corner. The visitors pretty much wrapped up the tie on the 75th minute. Alfonso Davies flying down the left-wing found Lewandowski at the back post who passed it in and the game and tie were over.

Bayern are now the second-favourites to win the Champions League at 7/2 with Chelsea way out at 250/1. It’s going to take something very special for Chelsea to go and turn around the tie and get through.

Real Madrid vs Man City

A couple of years ago this would have been probably the biggest game in the world. Since then though Real Madrid haven’t been the same with Ronaldo leaving and Man City haven’t had the best of seasons in the Premier League. Real were 2/1 before the game with Man City the favourites for this heavyweight clash.

City started an unexpected 11 with Aguero, Fernandinho and Sterling all on the bench. It seemed to be working though with the visitors having a very impressive first half with Jesus nearly scoring twice. Courtois pulling off a brilliant save and Ramos clearing one off the line. Real Madrid didn’t create many chances and didn’t seem to be causing Pep’s side much trouble.

The second half was far more entertaining though and Madrid took a surprising lead through Isco. City lost the ball in their own half with Vinicius playing through Isco to put the home side one up. City new that an away goal would be huge and pushed to get one.

They levelled up through Jesus. The striker beat Ramos to a header and City were now in control. They didn’t sit back though and went for another. Sterling was fouled in the box and up stepped De Bruyne to score the penalty and put Pep’s side in dreamland. To make it even harder for the hosts, Ramos was sent off for bringing down Jesus as the last man. This was a famous win for City and there first ever against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

City are the favourites to win the Champions League and are at 11/4. Real are now at 33/1 and have a mountain to climb to win the Champions League, especially without Eden Hazard.
