Erling Haaland Crowned 2020 Golden Boy
After his meteoric rise in the last year, Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland was the crowned the winner of the 2020 Golden Boy award.
The Golden Boy award is given out annually and voted for by sports journalists. In order to win the award, a play must be under the age of 21 and play in one of Europe’s top leagues. Winning this award is a huge achievement with some big names winning it in the past.
It was first awarded back in 2003, with Rafael van der Vaart winning. Since then notable winners have been Rooney, Messi, Pogba, Mbappe and Sterling to name but a few.
The Competitors
Much like a live casino, winning this award was no easy task for Haaland. He was up against some good competition for this award including Mason Greenwood, Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Alphonso Davies and Ansu Fati, with the latter two coming second and third.
The Norwegian striker joined Dortmund in January from RB Salzburg for €20 million. He scored 28 times in 22 games for the Austrian side before leaving for Germany. Since arriving at Dortmund, Haaland has 31 goals in 30 games and has set several new records in the Champions League.
At the age of 20 he already looks a real talent and is only going to get better and maybe even look to win the Ballon d’Or, like fellow Golden Boy winner Lionel Messi has done six times.
Haaland In 2020/21
With a goalscoring record like Haalands, Dortmund will be looking to finally stop Bayern winning yet another Bundesliga title. They are currently second in the league on 18 points, with Bayern one point ahead of them in first place.
Bayern are favourites to retain their title at 1/10 with Dortmund at 14/1. However, Haaland has ten goals so far this season and that sort of scoring form will push the reigning champions all the way should he keep it up.
Haaland is in just as good form in the Champions League. He has six goals in four games so far and is the joint top scorer in the competition. Haaland is 6/1 to finish top goal scorer at the end and this will depend on how long Dortmund last in the Champions League.
Dortmund are one of the outsiders to win the competition at 20/1, with their German rivals the favourites for another competition at 11/4.
