It has been a splendid week for the English, and it isn’t often you get to say that. The senior squad advanced to the finals of the UEFA Nations League, the youth squad is fluorescing and I’m a celebrity is back on telly!
The U21 squad travelled to Denmark in hope to extend their seventeen matches unbeaten run. The last time Boothroyd’s men lost was against Germany in June 2017, it also happened to be on penalties. The squad is performing brilliantly and the advancement in England’s youth squad has done wonders for Southgate’s senior side. Not to forget, Gareth Southgate was last in charge of the U21’s prior to his appointment as Head Coach.
There are many exciting prospects in the squad but the name on everyone’s mind is Dominic Solanke. The Liverpool forward has been playing at the top of his game lately and netted twice verse Italy last week. Shortly before halftime, Solanke guided a beautiful header into the Danish goal to double Englands one-goal lead. Denmark immediately replied with a fast move which caught the defence off guard. It was tucked in by the Danish Captain, Marcus Ingvartsen who never shies for an effort at goal.
After the break, The Three Lions reasserted their dominance before the 47′ minute mark. Solanke on the scoresheet again with an unconventional finish which got the commentators really excited. Solanjke followed in an effort at goal from outside the box and found himself with the ball facing his own goal. With pressure increasing from the opposition defenders he didn’t have the time to turn and take the shot. Instead, he dug his heel into the bottom of the ball and it pinged into the back of the net.
The scoreline remained stale until the last ten minutes when Calvert-Lewin finished off an English counter-attack. The Everton youngster was bought on as a substitute shortly before his goal and this wouldn’t be his only impact on the game. In the 85′ minute he won a penalty and instead of allowing Captain Salanke to complete his hat-trick, Calvin-Lewin stepped up to take penalty spot himself. The penalty was converted perfectly and England secured their convincing victory over Denmark.
Everton fans took to Twitter to praise Calvin-Lewin, not only for his performance but for not allowing the Liverpool player to complete his hat-trick. There could be a fierce rivalry in the making, but as long as they both keep scoring its good for the competition.
