Edinson Cavani Announces Himself To The Premier League

Cavani Man Utd

Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani showed why Man United signed him after coming to their rescue in yesterdays 3-2 win over Southampton

When Man United signed Cavani on the final day of the transfer window, many people saw it as another panic buy from the club. They have a history of signing players coming to the end of their careers and it seemed Cavani was another.

However, Solskjaer and the United board had confidence in the ex-PSG striker. Before joining United he has 353 goals in 589 games and they were just league games. He has been prolific during his career and in particular at Napoli and PSG.

Cavani has impressed since joining United and fans were surprised to see him on the bench yesterday, especially with Martial not in the squad. United struggled in the first half of the game and found themselves 2-0 down to Southampton and had missed some clear cut chances themselves.

At half time, Cavani was brought on and this was his big chance. He looked fired up from the start and had his first involvement when playing in Bruno to get the score back to 2-1. Cavani then got his new side level with ten minutes to go when he scored a diving header from a Bruno Fernandes shot.

With Cavani, United finally have an out and out goal scorer and he proved this with three minutes left. Rashford put a ball into the front post and once again Cavani was in the right place and headed it into the bottom corner and put United 3-2 up. He was exactly what United had been missing of late and will hope to kick on from here and get himself in the starting 11.

Can United Kick On?

After a poor start to the season, this is now United’s fourth win in a row and third consecutive one in the league. The win has taken them to eighth in the table, but if they win their game in hand they will only be two points off the top.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs all dropped points this weekend and as a result, United’s odd dropped too. They are down from 35/1 to 25/1 on Paddy Power to win the Premier League this season. This is going to be a big ask as they have been very poor at times this season but now they are on a good run, who knows! Liverpool are now the joint-favourites at 13/8, alongside Man City. Mourinho’s Spurs side are at 11/2 and could be a dark horse this season!

United’s next game is against Cavani’s former side, PSG. United have already beaten them once in the Champions League this season and another win Wednesday would see them qualify from the group. Cavani is 15/8 to score anytime Wednesday and 6/1 to get the first goal of the game. United know a point is good enough to ensure qualification from the group. They are 22/1 to go all the way, which could drop quickly should they get a favourable draw in the next round.
