The Champions League resumes next week, but who is the favourite to score the most goals in the biggest club competition in the world.
The biggest club competition in the world starts again tonight, with the best players in the world all taking part. Finishing top goalscorer in the Champions League is a huge achievement and one that only the very best players have done.
In last season’s competition, Erling Haaland finished top scorer for the first time, but it will definitely not be the last. He ended on an impressive ten goals and broke records along the way.
Ronaldo is currently leading the way for the most goals in Champions League history. The Man United forward has 137 goals to his name and with a few more seasons left in him, you wouldn’t put it past him getting to 150!
Champions League Top Scorer Odds 21/22
Robert Lewandowski – 4 goals – 5/4
One of the best goal scorers in Europe last season is leading the way this year in the odds. The Bayern Munich striker got just five goals last season’s Champions League, but a lot of that was down to missing four of their games with injury. The season before when he lasted the whole campaign, he got 15 goals in the competition, a fantastic record.
There is no arguing, Lewandowski is one of, if not the best striker in the world. He has started this season well with eight goals already and plays in a side that loves scoring. Bayern are one of the favourites and should go far, which means potentially more games for the Polish striker and more chances to score. He scored four in his opening two games, showing he is back to his best in Europe.
Sebastian Haller – 5 goals – 6/1
The Ajax striker joined them in the January transfer window of last season, after not the most successful time at West Ham. In the 23 games he played for Ajax last season, he scored 13, just one less than he managed in all of his 54 games for West Ham, showing he is a good goalscorer in the right team.
Haller has hit the ground running though in this year’s Champions League. He scored four on his debut in the competition against Sporting Lisbon. Ajax are a side that scores a lot of goals and create a lot of chances. If he carries on he could have this wrapped up before the knockout stages!

Mo Salah – 3 goals – 17/2
Salah wasn’t one of the favourites at the start of the season, but his current form has put him right up there. Salah already has 35 Champions League goals in his career, putting him 20th in the all time list. Last season he scored six but given how he’s playing and Liverpool having their best players back, he should be well on his way to beating that this season.
He has scored in both of Liverpool games in the Champions League so far, with two coming against Porto. We already know how good of a goalscorer Salah is and with at least four group games to go, 17/2 is a very interesting price!
Cristiano Ronaldo – 2 goals – 17/2
The ex-Real Madrid striker the competitions greatest ever goalscorer. Ronaldo got just four in the competition last season, which for him is a poor return however, like Messi, his side were struggling. This year he is playing for Man United who has been in need of a goalscorer for a while and plays a style of football that will suit him.
Like we said about Haaland, this could all be dependant on how long his side stays in the competition. United though have made some very good transfers this season and if they all hit the ground running there is no reason they can’t go far. Cristiano Ronaldo shocks us season after season and he is still as physically capable as anyone. There is a reason he has 137 goals and won the Champions League golden boot seven times so don’t bet against him. Ronaldo did what he does best in United’s last Champions League game, scoring a last-minute winner for them against Villarreal.

Erling Haaland – 1 goal – 10/1
The Dortmund striker really announced himself to the world playing in the Champions League for RB Salzburg. He scored a hat-trick on his debut and went on to score in five consecutive matches. This got him a move to Dortmund and he hasn’t stopped since.
Last year he finished with the Champions League’s top scorer with 10 and only made it to the quarter-finals. In doing so he got himself to 20 goals in the competition, setting a new record for the youngest and fastest person to score that amount of goals in the Champions League. Haaland is an incredible player and will score a lot of goals this season. The only thing that could go against him is that his side are likely to play less games than some of the bigger teams in the competition. He got his first goal of this years campaign in a 2-1 win over Besiktas

Romelu Lukaku – 1 goal – 12/1
The new Chelsea striker comes into the club with the job of being their goalscorer. He has 16 goals in his Champions League career, four of which came last season for Inter Milan. Now he is at the side who picked up the Champions League crown last season and one of the favourites to do so again this year.
Lukaku has improved his finishing a great deal and at the age of 28 is probably coming into his best years. He wouldn’t be the first name you’d say would score the most this season but he is certainly capable of doing it. Lukaku scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 over Zenit St Petersburg, showing once again how important he is to this Chelsea side. He will be hoping for a repeat of last season for his side so he can also become a Champions League winner.
Lionel Messi – 1 goal – 14/1
You can’t talk about who will be the Champions League top scorer and not mention this man. He has finished top scorer six times in his career and has a total of 120 goals to his name in the competition. Last season wasn’t his best with only five goals, but he was playing a struggling Barcelona side, as crazy as that sounds!
This year he has moved to PSG who are one of the favourites in the Champions League odds. This can only mean one thing, goals and a lot of them. Lionel Messi is now 34 years of age so his playing time will be managed, but most likely in Ligue 1. PSG are desperate to win the Champions League and that was part of the reason in bringing Messi to the club. They can go all the way with their new squad and it’ll give Messi a lot of chances to add to his already incredible record. Messi got his first goal for his new club in their last Champions League game scoring a fantastic goal against City.
Outside Chances:
Kylian Mbappe (16/1 – 0 goals) – It wasn’t the ideal start against Club Brugge for PSG and Mbappe. They will go a long way though and he can push to be the Champions League top scorer.
Karim Benzema (16/1 – 1 goal) – Real Madrid‘s striker is the most inform player in Europe at the moment. He only has one goal so far but is in great form in the league and will be hoping to bring it across.
