If you are anything like me, you woke up today feeling a bit lost knowing that the Champions League won’t be back until next year. The draw for the Last 16 will take place on December 17th with the Knockout’s beginning in February.
Some sides just about managed to scrape through to join the elites of Europe, most surprisingly being Tottenham Hotspurs. Without a doubt, Spurs are a quality side and deserve to be in the last 16 of the competition. However, the element of shock comes from the fact Mauricio Pochettino’s men had to leave the Nou Camp with nothing less than a point. A daunting realisation but one that failed to affect Spurs’ performance as they came out of the blocks and attacked the Spanish Champions.
Tottenham suffered an early blow in the match when Ousmane Dembele completed a superb solo goal in the 7′ minute. Both teams proceeded to attack but Barcelona was playing with less pressure as they had already qualified. The Englishmen were reluctant to bow out of the tournament and were eventually rewarded five minutes from the end as Lucas Moura guided it in from a precise Kane cross. The point assured Spurs’ qualification as Inter only managed to win a point against their visitors PSV.
Two weeks ago Betfred was offering 6/1 for all English teams to advance to the Knockouts. If you were optimistic enough, the bet would have come in last night as all four Premier League sides advance to the Last 16 for the second time consecutively. Liverpool also accomplished a tricky task as they needed to beat Napoli at Anfield. Fortunately, Mo Salah came through with the goods as the Runners-up from last season look to outdo themselves.
It will feel long a long few months now until the Champions League returns but if it is anything like the groups, we are in for a treat.
