Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa on Sunday night and in doing so became the highest-scoring foreign player in Premier League history.

Aston Villa hosted Man City on Sunday afternoon in the weekends final Premier League game. City were obviously the favourites for this game with some bookmakers having them at 1/6 before the game.

Villa went into game week 21 only one point above the bottom three. With Bournemouth and Watford, the two teams who could overtake them, playing each other they had to get a result on Sunday to not be in the bottom three.

The home side started new loanee signing Danny Drinkwater. Most fans were excited by this as he is a Premier League winner and could be what they are missing in Midfielder. However, his debut didn’t go to plan…

Aston Villa vs Man City

Villa were on the back foot from the off and it took just 18 minutes for City to open the scoring. Poor defending by Drinkwater allowed his ex-Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez to get his first goal of the game.

Mahrez doubled the lead six minutes later thanks to another Drinkwater gift. A poor clearance by the midfielder fell to the feet of the Algerian who made it 2-0.

After this City knew they had the beating of Villa and didn’t take their foot off the gas. Aguero then went to work on the home side and by the 81st minute, it was 6-0 thanks to one from Jesus and three from the Argentinian.

Villa did one get back in the 91st minute through a penalty but it was all about Aguero.

Aguero’s 12th hat-trick took him to 177 Premier League goals. This now puts him as the highest-scoring foreign player in Premier League history, overtaking Thierry Henry on 175 and joining Frank Lampard.

Aguero going for top goalscorer

Now on 177 goals, it puts him 83 goals of off Alan Shearer who has 260. He has a contract at Man City until 2021, so it really depends if signs a new contract at the club. Pep has said that decision lies with him, implying that the club is happy to give him another one.

Out of all the players who have scored over 100 goals in the Premier League, Aguero has the best goals-to-game ratio. He averages 0.68 goals per game. To get another 83 goals in the Premier League he’s going to need to play another 122 games if he can stick to his goals-to-games ratio.

That’s going to be hard for him as that would be another four seasons after this and not missing any games at all. Considering he is 31 now it doesn’t look like it’ll happen, but you wouldn’t be surprised if he managed it!

This year, however, he is having a good season. He has 13 goals and three assists, four goals off top scorer Jamie Vardy. What’s most impressive this season is his minutes per goal, which is considerably less than any other player in the league. He is scoring a goal on average every 77 minutes this season. This is 29 minutes less than Vardy.

Vardy is the favourite on Betway at 5/4 with Aguero second favourite at 5/1. Should he be able to stay fit and get a run of games then this is definitely achievable. Marcus Rashford is the third favourite at 10/1 with 14 goals this season.
