When Mario Gotze smashed in the winner against Argentina in the World Cup Final it sparked wild celebrations all over Germany and in Edinburgh!

A lucky Scottish Skybet customer was toasting ‘Die Mannschaft’ winning the World Cup as the result landed him the final part of a £100 fivefold accumulator he’d staked with Skybet. In total the bet paid out a massive £83,000 – the wager included Germany to win the World Cup, Real Madrid to win the Champions League, Wolves & QPR to be promoted and Manchester City to win the Premier League.

Sky Bet football trader Marc Hodges said: “With the first four legs of the acca all winners back in May it has been a long wait but a worthwhile one for this lucky customer.

“He backed German to lift the trophy back in August and will no doubt been cheering home Gotze’s extra-time winner.”

It wasn’t the only hard luck story for the bookmakers during the 2014 World Cup, the 7-1 thrashing of Brazil by eventual winners German had the bookies diving for cover quicker than Arjen Robben. Paddy Power reported “A whopping 75 per cent of the 90 minute book was on Germany at 9/5, and 82 per cent of the cash in the ‘To Qualify’ market was on Joachim Lowe’s side at 10/11. It really was a pasting for Paddy.”

To add insult to injury four Paddy Power customers also had the correct score for the match at odds of 500/1. Paddy Power added “there were some stupid looking punts that look like a stroke of genius now. One punter from Essex had a fiver on it and cashed in on a cool £2,505”

It just goes to show – the bookies don’t always win, but the Germans usually do!
