A Sixth Champions League Final Win For Bayern!
Bayern Munich came out victorious in an empty Estádio da Luz against PSG to take their Champions League trophy tally up to six
PSG and Bayern met in the Champions League final last night, with it being only the second time a French and German club made it to the same final. The last time was when Bayern played St Etienne in 1976 and the game finished 1-0 to the Germans…
This was PSG’s first-ever Champions League final and there was a lot of pressure on the team considering the amount of money spent. They went into this game with the two most expensive signings ever in Neymar (£200m) and Mbappe (£163m). Since they were taken over in 2011 by the Qatar Sports Investment, the Champions League has always been the aim.
Bayern were going into this one as the favourites. They had been to ten Champions League finals before this and had won every single game they’d played in the competition this season. On top of this, they had scored 40 goals 25 of which came against Spurs, Chelsea and Barca!
Many fans were hoping this would be one of the best finals in recent history. Granted without fans in the ground it wouldn’t be the same, but these are two fantastic teams that love to score goals.
Bayern Munich vs PSG
The first chance of the game fell to Neymar. The Brazilian shooting for 10 yards out which brought out a double save from Neuer to keep it level. Four minutes later, Bayern had their own first chance of the game with Lewandowksi hit the post on the half volley.
It was a very intense and tight game, with both sides not wanting to give away much early on. Mbappe had his first opportunity after a mistake from David Alaba. A one to with Herrera set the Frenchman eight yards out with the whole goal to aim for but hit it straight at Neuer.
The deadlock was broken in the 58th minute and it was from the surprise selection in the Bayern side. Kingsley Coman scored a header at the back post after a brilliant ball from Kimmich. The French winger was released form PSG in 2014 and has come back to haunt them.
Minutes later, Coman nearly doubled his tally and Bayerns lead but PSG’s captain Thiago Silva cleared in off the line. This would be his final match at the club, as he looks set to join Chelsea at the age of 35.
Marquinhos has a big chance with 20 minutes to go but once again Neuer stood tall. PSG pushed but struggled to make many more chances. The final one of the game fell to ex-Stoke City striker Choupa Mouting, he tried to backheel flick Neymar’s shot in but didn’t connect with the ball.
The game finished and Bayern won their sixth Champions League. This then also meant that Bayern had won the treble this season. Manuel Neuer was named Man Of The Match after keeping a clean sheet in what was the first time in 35 European games PSG have failed to score in.
Champions League 20/21
Paddy Power already have odds available on next seasons winners. The 20/21 competition starts in late October, with the draw doe the group stages on October 1st. At this point the odds could change as to who is favourite to win, depending on who they get in their groups.
Bayern are the favourites again, alongside Man City. They are both priced at 5/1 with last years winners Liverpool just behind them at 6/1. These three sides are without a doubt the best three sides in world football currently. The price of them to win the Champions League next tear probably won’t get any better than this, unless they get a very hard group.
However, maybe you fancy PSG to bounce back and win the competition for the first time in their history. They are at 7/1 and you would imagine they will spend a lot of money this summer so they can try again next year.
Chelsea and Man United, are the other two English sides in the competition. They are both priced at 22/1 and if they get a good draw in the group stages who knows. Anything can happen in knockout football!
