After losing Van Dijk to a season-long injury, Liverpool defensive troubles were increased with two more first-teamers now injured!

Liverpool was dealt a huge blow in the Merseyside derby when they lost Van Dijk to an ACL injury. Without him, Klopp’s defence is considerably weaker and it appears now, it’s only gotten worse.

Full-back Trent Alexander Arnold picked up a calf injury against Man City on Sunday. He had to come off with it on the 60th minute and scans shown that he was going to be out for around four weeks. Now with the international break, it meant he wouldn’t miss too many games for Liverpool, but he would still be a miss.

However, the worst was yet to come. Joe Gomez joined him on the sidelines with an injury he picked up in England training. It is not clear exactly what he has done however we do know it is a knee injury and has been reported as being a serious one.

Southgate said he seemed to be in a lot of pain and the injury occurred whilst on his own and it was due to a challenge. If Gomez is out, it will mean Liverpool will have Matip and Fabinho as the two senior centre-backs with Natt Phillips and Rhys Williams the only other centreback. Ideally, Liverpool would start with Gomez and Van Dijk so this will be a big set back for Klopp.

With two big setbacks, surely Liverpool have dropped in the odds for the Premier League and Champions Leauge?

Liverpool Behind City In The Odds

Last years Premier League winners would love to add a second Premier League title to their record. This would have been and will still be Klopp’s main aim this season. Liverpool are now priced at 6/4 to win the league with City at 7/5.

Liverpool are ahead of City in the table by five points. The two sides met last weekend and drew 1-1 which was a good result for Klopp’s side as they went in as not the favourites for the first time in a long time. They still have the quality at the top end of the pitch to beat any team and win the league, they just might need to work that extra bit harder to bail the defence out here and there!

In terms of the Champions League, Liverpool are still behind City, but their odds haven’t really dropped. Liverpool are still the third favourites at 6/1 and are flying in the group stages with three wins out of three. They will qualify for the knockout stages and then its anyone’s guess. They are a very hard side to beat in knockout football and the fact City are lower priced at 9/2, won’t bother them!
