In the early hours of Friday morning (CET), Chile host Argentina in what could be a pivotal game in South American qualifying for World Cup 2022.

La Roja still has it all to do to book their place at this year’s World Cup. The home side is currently sixth-place in the group, but just a point behind fourth-place Colombia and Peru who occupy the inter-confederation play-off berth.

A 2-0 home defeat by Ecuador last time out could prove to be a massive blow to Chile’s chances of making it to Qatar. The defeat came on the back of three straight victories in qualifying for Martin Lasarte’s team.

A record of just two wins in their last five home qualifiers has not helped La Roja’s qualification chances.

Argentina

La Albiceleste have already booked their place at the World Cup and currently sit second in the group, six points behind arch-rivals and group leaders Brazil. Lionel Scaloni’s team are unbeaten in their last 17 World Cup qualifiers.

A 0-0 home draw against Brazil last time out ended a three-game winning run for the visitors in qualifying. The game saw Argentina’s solid defensive record continue though, as they have now kept six straight clean sheets in World Cup qualifying.

The visitors are eight games unbeaten on their travels in World Cup qualifying, having recorded five wins in the process. That run stretches back to 2017 when they lost 2-0 in Bolivia.
