Hungary vs Portugal

TUES 15 JUN 2021 – KO 20:00

Hungary host Portugal in just their fourth ever visit to the European Championship, with the action taking place on June 15th in the host’s national stadium!

Hungary kicks off their 2020 European Championship by taking on Portugal in the Ferenc Puskas Stadium. Marco Rossi’s side has been drawn in the toughest group at the competition and is now the second-highest priced side in the tournament.

The hosts qualified for Euro 2020 via the play-off stages after the qualifiers. They beat Bulgaria in the semi-finals, before beating Iceland in the final.

After taking on Portugal in their first game, Hungary will then host France on June 19th before ending the campaign with a trip to Munich on June 23rd to take on Germany. This is a ridiculously tough group, given all three countries have won an international tournament in the last seven years!

As well as having an incredibly tough run of games, Hungary also doesn’t have the strongest squad. In terms of well-known players, there is very few. There is RB Leipzig goalkeeper Gulasci, who we imagine will be very busy this summer. Adam Szalai is their top scorer of late with 23 goals to his name, but apart from that, there is very little else.

In terms of their chances against Portugal, we are giving them very little. They most recently met in the World Cup qualifiers in 2017, with Portugal winning both of the games. Hungary has very little international experience and this will be a big issue for them.

Against Portugal, and the rest of the group the only bonus they may have is teams will look to rest players against them so it may not be full strength sides their coming up against.

The current holders of the European Championship get their campaign off to a nice start with a game against Hungary, before taking on two potential competition winners in France and Germany.

Getting three points on the board at the start will be huge for Portugal as then it means they only need to win one of the last two games. They don’t want to be heading Munich and Budapest in need of two wins!

Portugal is one of the shortest-priced teams this summer at 15/2 with Paddy Power and we think that’s fantastic value. Over the past couple of seasons, particularly in the Premier League, some of the star performers have been Portuguese players. Couple this with the fact they won it last time and they should probably be at a shorter price.

Their current squad is full of world-class players, that could beat anyone. From the Premier League, there is Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto. That’s without even mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix. This is a fantastic squad and one that is full of big game players!

Against Hungary, Portugal will need to win and win convincingly. With the group stages being just three games it can easily go down to goal difference. We are backing the visitors to win this game and get off to the perfect start at Euro 2020!
