The Champions League 2020/21 campaign kicks off tonight and we have the latest odds for who will finish top goalscorer this year!
Every year, the best players in the world fight it out to finish top goalscorer in the Champions Leauge. It is the biggest competition in club football and it can really propel footballer careers to the next level.
As the best goalscorers in the world play in Europe, it’s a very tough call to say who will finish top. Last season, Lewandowski finished top with 15 goals as his side went on to win the Champions League.
Ronaldo though is the greatest goalscorer in the competition’s history. He has finished top a record seven times and has more goals than anyone with 130 goals in 170 games. On top of this, he also has the record for the most goals in one Champions League campaign with 17 in 2013/14.
Champions League Top Scorer 20/21
Robert Lewandowski – 16/5
The Bayern Munich frontman was pivotal in his side winning the Champions League last season. He finished top goalscorer with 15 and is fourth in the all-time list for the competition with 68. In Bayern’s group this year is Red Bull Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow.
Lewandowski has two goals so far in three games and has 13 in all competitions already this season. On top of this, his side is the 4/1 favourites to win the competition. The longer they are in the better chance he has to finish top again as he’ll have more games.
Lionel Messi – 5/1
The greatest player in the history of the game was at an all-time high 7/1 to finish top scorer before the competition has started. Messi has 115 goals in his Champions League career, at a ratio of 0.8 goals per game! Last season was one of his worst seasons though getting just three goals. However, he has been the top goalscorer in six different years.
So far Messi has three goals in the Champions League this season. In his group are Ferencvaros and Dynamo Kiev where he will expect to add a couple more goals at least to his tally.
Erling Haaland – 6/1
The youngster is a goal-scoring machine and especially in the Champions League. He now has 14 goals in his first eleven games in the competition setting a record. On top of this, Haaland has scored in every single group stage game he has played in. Haaland has four goals so far so is in good form. Like we said before his side needs to stay in the competition for as long as possible to be top scorer and Dortmund have a good side, especially with keeping Sancho this summer.
Mo Salah – 17/2
One person who has gone under the radar is Liverpool’s Egyptian winger Mo Salah. He has two goals so far, so two off the top scorers with four, but you expect Liverpool to go further than most in this competition. Liverpool have shown already they can take teams apart in this competition after beating Atalanta 5-0. With them having a shakey defence now, Salah may need to finish top scorer for them to have a chance of winning the competition.
