Is This The Worst Dive In History?
Football is a fast pace game and it is impossible for the referee to be everywhere at once to ensure he makes the right decision.
But we think you’ll agree he probably should have done a little better on this occasion considering just how bad the drive is.
In the above video, Delhi Dynamos striker Marcelo Leite Pereira, also known as Marcelinho, sprints towards the goal in their Indian Super League game against Atletico de Kolkata.
As he makes his way inside the area he kicks the ball a little too far ahead of him and is quickly closed down by two defenders.
So he has two options – in his head anyway.
Try and latch onto the ball, keep it in play and wait for back up, or throw himself to the floor and hope the referee decides there was contact.
Opting for the latter, Marcelinho pulls off the most unbelievable swan dive you will ever see – something that would give Chris Mears a run for his money.
The ref decides that there was contact (there wasn’t) and awards the spot-kick, which ex- Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda takes.
Fortunately – although not for the 36-year-old and his team – karma struck and the penalty was missed, meaning Atletico de Kolkata preserved their lead.
