A Northumbria derby used to be the centrepiece of both Sunderland & Newcastle season. Nowadays, however, the two rivals rarely get to meet in what always promised to be a feisty fixture.
Since Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League in 2014, they have continued to fall down to football leagues. They finished bottom of the Premiership and the following campaign saw them finish last in the Championship too. For a club as large as Sunderland it is shocking to see them in the third division.
As much as Newcastle fans cherish the fact their derby rivals are suffering, they will also admit they miss the clash. The last time they met was in 2016 which is why so many fans showed up for the clash between Newcastle u21’s and Sunderland’s first team this week. Prior to kick off, 17,00 tickets were sold for the Checkatrade Trophy fixture. A sizeable audience which is what caused concerns from local authorities.
There was no trouble at the ground but Newcastle fans did come up with a pretty funny chant regarding Sunderland. ‘We seen you crying on Netflix’ is the melody to the chant and Sunderland fans had no response. This song spawned from the new documentary on Netflix which began with Sunderland’s bid to regain their spot in the Premier League. As we all know, this was not the case and the episode ended with their relegation to League 1. Fortunately for the Black Cats, they won the match 4-0 which restored a glimpse of pride.
