Southampton were beaten 9-0 for the second time in two years, as their bad run of form gets even worse in the Premier League!
The Saints travelled to Old Trafford last night on a run of three consecutive losses in the league. It was always going to be a tough game for them. Southampton had several debutants having to take places on the bench due to injuries. However, Man United hadn’t won in two games and Southampton still had some key players available meaning they could have made a game of it.
United were the favourites for this and after just 82 seconds, there was no way they weren’t going to win. Making his first start in the Premier League, Alex Jankewitz was sent off after just a minute. He was late in a challenge with McTominay and was awarded a straight red, leaving the visitors an impossible job.
It took the hosts until the 18th minute to open the scoring. Wan Bissaka got his second goal for the club converting a Luke Shaw cross. This sent United on their way and by half time it was 4-0. Rashford and Cavani getting one each and Bendnarek scoring an own goal.
The second half started slow but United got going again after Martial scored in the 69th minute. Two minutes later McTominay got on the score sheet to make it 6-0. Things went from bad to worse for Bednarek, the centre half was sent of for a foul on Martial and United were awarded a penalty. Bruno got his first of the game and his 12th of the season. United rubbed salt in the wounds by not letting off and Dan James finished the game off tapping in from three yards in the 93rd minute.
This was the second time Ralph Hasenhuttl had been subject to a 9-0 loss whilst in charge of Southampton. Their other one came against Leicester in 2019.

Where Now For Southampton?
Southampton had made a good start to the season, but it’s not going so well now. They have now lost four games in a row and sit 12th in the table. A top-half finish will be the minimum that Southampton will want from this season. They have shown they are good enough when they have a fully fit squad. The Saints are priced at 13/8 to get in the top half on Paddy Power.
Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has survived a 9-0 defeat before so he should survive this one, for the time being. He is 17/2 to be the next manager sacked and even though it’s unlikely he will go soon if the poor results carry on then who knows!
Southampton aren’t in the FA Cup any more so can put all their focus into the Premier League and improving their current form.
