Man United did the unthinkable and overturned a 2-0 first leg loss against PSG to qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League!
Solskjaer’s men set a new record last night by being the first team in the Champions League history to lose the first leg at home by 2 or more goals and still progress to the next round! This was also Man Uniteds ninth consecutive win on the road extending their current record of eight wins.
Prior to the game in Paris, United were 125/1 to win the tournament on Bet365, but now they are 10/1. Just to qualify last night was 18/1, so it’s safe to say no one really gave them a chance.
The game
Man United got off to the perfect start with Lukaku scoring in the second minute. Young German fullback Kehrer passed the ball back and the United striker intercepted, took it round Buffon and scored from the tight angle. Kehrer signed from Schalke last season and has had a good debut season but won’t look back fondly on last nights performance.
The lead didn’t last long though as Mbappe played a lovely through ball to Bernat ten minutes later. Eric Bailly played him onside and he also didn’t have a great game. At 1-1 PSG had all the ball, in the first 30 minutes United recorded just 13% possession. However, possession doesn’t alway win matches and United sure shown that.
Rashford shot from about 30 yards out and due to the power Buffon spilt it. Lukaku followed up the loose ball and put it past the Italian goalkeeper to regain Uniteds lead. After the match the pair spoke about playing together and that they had said they’d talked about Lukaku always following up Rashfords shot. United managed to see it out to half time and belief grew. This is the first time in the Belgian strikers career he’s scored two or more in three consecutive games.
The second half resumed and the game was nearly over within then minutes. Di Maria finished off a fantastic ball from Mbappe with a dink over De Gea. Thankfully for the visitors it was ruled offside and rightly so.
The game carried on and neither team managed to grab a goal. Ole brought on Chong and Greenwood, both academy players. In doing so Greenwood became the youngest ever player for Man Unitd in the Champions League, 17 years and 156 days old.
Towards the end of the game PSG should have finished the game. Mbappe went one on one and after good goalkeeping from De Gea and an excellent tackle from Smalling the ball stayed out. It did however fall to Bernat who could have got his second but his shot hit the post.
Then the moment of the game. Dalot got the ball 25 yards out and had an ambitious strike. All the players set up for the corner but Dalot appealed hand ball. VAR told the referee to check the monitor and after three minutes of watching the clip the penalty was given. Kimpembe jumped up and turned his back to the ball and in the process it struck his arm. Controversial decision to give the pen but United didn’t care.
After what seemed like a life time Rashford finally got to step up to take the pen. This was his first ever penalty for Man United and after watching it you would never have known. The striker smashed the ball into the left hand side of the goal. Buffon had no chance.
The referee finally blew his whistle in the 99th minute and PSG crashed out the Champions League once again after letting a comfortable lead slip.
