Man City smash Schalke 7-0 to send Peps men through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League!

The fact that City had scored three away goals meant they were never really in doubt to go through. This was reflected in the odds with some bookmakers pricing City at 1/250 to qualify! However, the hosts were very professional about the job and made sure there was no chance of an upset.

The game would have pleased Pep as he was missing De Bruyne, Mendy, Kompany, Fernandinho and Otamendi. That’s not to say they don’t have other world-class players. But this win keeps them in good form for the league campaign too.

The game

Unlike the Juventus game, this one started relatively slow. City didn’t need to score and were happy to keep the ball for the opening moments of the match. In the 13th minute, Sterling picked the ball up in the Schalke box and passed it to Aguero who was three yards out. All he had to do was pass the ball in the net but somehow hit the post.

Thankfully though, he managed to make amends of this in the 32nd minute when Bernardo Silva was brought down in the box. Aguero took the pen and chipped it cooly down the middle of the goal. He then doubled his tally three minutes later. Sterling the provider to Aguero three yards out again, this time putting it through the keeper’s legs. Sane finished the half off nicely for the hosts. A brilliant through ball from Zinchenko and Sane was one on one with the keeper. Again the ball going through his legs and City were 3-0 at half time.

City started the second half quicker than the first and were 4-0 up on the 56th minute. Sane played a ball across the whole defence to a free Sterling at the back post. The winger slotted the ball in to keep his fantastic scoring form going. We then had another 15-minute wait for the next goal. Again Sane the provider, who found Bernardo Silva making a late run to the penalty spot to pass the ball into the bottom corner.

The next goal was the best of the evening. Sane did a fantastic piece of skill to lose his man and claim his third assist of the night. He played through young Phil Foden who took his goal like an experienced striker. He waited for the keeper to come out, moved his hips one way then went another. He was round the keeper and found himself looking into an empty net. Foden became the youngest goalscorer for City ever in the Champions League at 18 years old and 288 days. The final goal came from Gabriel Jesus. The striker got the ball on the edge of the box and beat the keeper at his near post to finish the 7-0 mauling of Schalke.

Man City were fantastic, Schalke couldn’t get anywhere near them. Peps men played brilliant fast-paced football all night but it must be said that Fahrmann should have done better with a number of goals.

City to go all the way

Pep said this week that his side are ‘teenager’ in the competition but they looked far from that last night. City are the favorites to win the competition at 9/4 with Juventus being priced as their biggest competition at 4/1. If you fancy Aguero to carry on being the man providing the goals he is also at 12/1 to finish at top goalscorer. If you think City have enough to get to the final but no get all the way they are 8/11 to get to the final.
