During the EFL cup final on Sunday the worlds most expensive goalkeeper refused to come off!
On Sunday afternoon Chelsea played Man City in the final of the EFL cup. The game finished 0-0 in 90 minutes and as a result went to extra time. Cramp is extremely common in extra-time as players are having to push themselves more than their used to. However, it isn’t very common amongst goalkeepers but it appeared to happen twice to Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
With two minutes left to go in the game the Spanish goalkeeper went down with was seemed to be cramp. As expected the Chelsea manager called up his second goalkeeper Willy Cabellero. This would have been the Argentines moment to go on and be a hero had it not been for Kepa. Chelseas number one refused to come off, wagging his finger in the direction on Sarri.
This didn’t go down well with the manager one bit. Sarri could be seen shouting at his medical staff and then throwing a bottle in the dug out. He then seemed to be walking out on Chelsea as he head to the tunnel. The Chelsea manager did however turn round and head back for the bench. The game was stopped for two minutes whilst the issue was sorted out. Chelsea did try their best to get him off with club legend Gianfranco Zola even shouting at him to come off.
Maybe it would have been for the best if Caballero had come on. The ex Man City keeper saved three penalties in the 2016 EFl Cup final where City beat Liverpool. Kepa stayed in goal for the following penalty shootout. He saved one but definitely should have saved another pen that went under him. For £71 million and the confidence to ignore your manager you should save all 5 penalties!
Chelsea went on to lose 4-3 on penalties and the whole substitute issue clouded what was a good performance. It was a huge improvement though from the 6-0 loss to Man City two weeks before. This incident made it what has already been a tough few weeks for Sarri even tougher. He was publicly ignored by his player and undermined. This shown player power overruled the manager and this wont look good for the Italian.
This is the first time in Citys history they have retained a major trophy after wining the EFL cup last year too. This has set Peps side to go on and win the quadruple. Bet365 have the current champions at 8/1 to go on and win all the other three available trophies.
