Sergio Ramos was sent off last night against Man City in the Champions League to get the 26th red card of his career!

Ramos is without a doubt one of the best centrebacks to ever play. He has won the Champions League and La Liga four times as well as the World Cup and European Championships with Spain.

However, what Ramos also has associated with him is his disciplinary record. Saying he is a hothead would be an understatement. He has got himself in trouble with referees a ridiculous amount of times and it has come back to cost him more than he expected.

Last night he was sent off, for the 26th time, against Man City in the Champions League. This means he will now be banned for the second leg at the Etihad, where his side are going in 2-1 down. This was a stupid red card to receive so late on in the game but he has had more controversial bookings.

Last season he purposely got himself booked in the Champions League so he would miss out the second leg of the Last 16 tie. Stupidly though he went on to admit what he had done and as a result, UEFA increase his ban to two games. This meant he missed the next game and Ajax managed to beat Real and knock them out.

Ramos the record-breaker

When you look deeper into his disciplinary record it looks even worse for the World Cup winner. However surprisingly, he has never got a red card for Spain in 170 games! That aside he is still the record holder for many disciplinary stats:

  • The most carded player in Spanish National team history – 24 yellows.
  • The most carder player in Champions League history – 40 yellows and 4 reds.
  • The joint most red-carded player in Champions League history.
  • The most booked player across all major European leagues.
  • The most amount of yellow cards in La Liga history – 187 yellows.
  • The most amount of red cards in La Liga history – 20 reds.

With him being out of the next leg the odds are stacked against Real Madrid. They are at 33/1 on Betway to go and win the Champions League. This will be even tougher without their captain. They are two points behind Barca in the league and they will hope he doesn’t get any more red cards. Real are at 6/5 to win the La Liga on Betwat. This weekend is the El Classico and it could all depend on that as to who wins the league.
