From Stacking Shelves To Playing Against Pep
Once again The Fa Cup has worked its magic and provided us with another giant killing in the form of Newport County v Middlesborough.
The Exiles booked their place into the fifth round thanks to goals from Robbie Willmott and Pádraig Amond. The former was part of the Newport team that got promotion to the Football League in 2013 but was the released in 2014. After unsuccessful spells with various clubs the winger took up a job at his local supermarket stacking shelves.
Knowing this wasn’t the career for him he got back into football and rejoined Newport in 2017. This turned out to be the right choice for both parties. The League Two side are now going to be facing the champions of England, Manchester City, thanks to the ex-shelf stackers first goal of the season.
The Citizens should be cautious when the make the 175 mile trip down to Newport. The Exiles have had some very impressive results in the FA Cup over the past two years. Last year they reached the fourth round of the competition by beating Leeds United in the third round and forcing Spurs into a fourth round replay. This year hasn’t be much different either, they have beaten Leicester in third round and now beaten Middlesborough in the replay of the fourth round.
It wasn’t just Middlesborough who wanted to make a quick escape come full time. After the whistle went Newport County’s goalkeeper Joe Day asked his manager “Please can I leave gaffer?”. This was down to the fact his wife had given birth to twin girls. Day had missed the first game between the two teams incase his wife went into labour, but with this not seeming to be any closer he decided to play the replay fixture. The manager allowed his goalkeeper to leave straight away and was quoted as saying, “He sprinted off the pitch and it’s the quickest I’ve ever see him move”.
Newport County will now welcome Pep Guardiolas men to Rodney Parade on Saturday 16th February at 17:30. The League Two club will be hoping for another cup upset and its seems as if the fans are more than confident as they could be heard singing “Manchester City, we’re coming for you!”. You can get Newport to win the game in 90 minutes at 25/1 (Paddy Power) or if you think they can carry on beating the big teams and go all the way Paddy Power will off you odds on 300/1!
