Crouchy, the robot dancing, 6 foot 7in veteran signs on the dotted line for Burnley…
Peter Crouch has represented a total of 6, soon to be 7, different clubs in the league. The first of which being Aston Villa back in 2002 and the most recent being Burnley where he was part of a swap deal, which saw striker Sam Vokes going the opposite direction to Stoke City.
At the age of 38 Crouch’s Premier League career is not one to be frowned upon. The 6ft 7in forward has a total of 108 goals in 462 Premier League appearances. Such record places Crouch in an elite club of 28 other footballers who have 100+ Premier League goals, including players such as Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry. Not bad company hey?!
Most of these goals came for Peter during his Stoke career where he found the back of the net a total 44 times. Having been at the club for 7 seasons it is no surprise that he was his most effective at The Potters but unfortunately found playing time difficult towards the end of his career there, and in fact set a record as the most used substitute in Premier League history with a total of 143 appearances from off the bench.
The 18/19 season for Stoke hasn’t been as rewarding for Crouchy, 23 appearances made up of only 1 start and 1 goal will mean this campaign will be one the striker won’t look back on fondly. This lack of game time may have made up part of the reason he agreed to take part in the BBC Radio 5 podcast, That Peter Crouch Podcast. From the robot to going on nights out with David Beckham, Crouch provides the listener to an insight to the world of a professional footballer.
However, its not just on the club scene where Crouchy has had an impact. He has one of the highest goals per game ratio for his country. He scored a total of 22 goals in 42 games giving him a ratio of a goal every 0.52 games. Such record is higher than that of Sir Geoff Hurst and Michael Owen! But his scoring wasn’t his only memorable International achievement, who can forget the robot celebration after he scored for England against Jamaica in 2006 prior to Englands World Cup campaign.
Despite his age and lack of game time Crouch is an exciting signing for Burnley fans whose direct style of play can play into the hands of ‘RoboCrouch’ and who knows, we may soon see the robot on Turf Moor some time soon!
