For any player to kick a referee in the head is an act of insanity. But for it to happen in Brazil, the home of football shows just how far gone their players must be.
Law enforcement officials in Brazil have said that a Brazilian soccer player has been indicted for attempted murder after delivering a strong kick to an official’s head during a second division match, knocking him unconscious.
After the referee failed to provide the Sao Paulo de Rio Grande team with a free kick, the situation got out of hand. William Ribeiro kicked a referee twice while he was on the floor. Referee Rodrigo Crivellaro was knocked out and taken to a local hospital. Ribeiro was arrested at the stadium and charged with attempted murder.
A statement from the Sao Paulo de Rio Grande confirmed that Ribeiro’s contract with the club had been terminated. “We would like to express our profound sorrow for one of the most regrettable incidents in our history,”.
The incident happened on the day that Sao Paulo was celebrating their 123rd anniversary.
