Another Late Liverpool Winner

Liverpool score another last-minute winning goal to put them back at the top of the Premier League!

Jurgen Klopp’s side found themselves drawing 1-1 on Sunday afternoon and were in need of a goal. If the game ended as a draw it meant City could have gone three points clear with a win on Wednesday. In the 90th minute, a Salah header was turned into the Spurs goal by defender Alderweireld.

This was the third time this season a last-minute goal has won Liverpool a game. No team has done this more than Liverpool this season. Eight times in the last twelve seasons the team who has scored the most goals in the last five minute of a game has then gone on to win the league. Liverpool will be hoping that this can help them land their first Premier League title.

The Game

Liverpool were the better team in the first half and took 16 minutes to take the lead. A ball out to Robertson on the left of the pitch and he then crossed it into the box. The ball in was perfect falling in between two Spurs centre-backs. Firmino was there to guide the ball into the back of the net.

Robertson has had a fantastic season for Liverpool and this was his ninth assist of the season. No defender has more and he is only two behind Edin Hazard who has the most.

Liverpool should have really extended their lead in the first half and missed a good chance through Mane. Spurs did grow into the game though and had a few chances of their own before the half finished 1-0.

The second half started and Spurs set up as a back four instead of a five as they did in the first half. This helped them and they took control of the game as a result.

Spurs kept pressing and had several big chances but couldn’t seem to find that final ball. However, in the 70th minute, they grabbed an equaliser. A quick free kick from Kane found Trippier out wide. He plays the ball to Eriksen who pulled it back to Lucas. He was on the penalty spot and guided the ball into the bottom corner.

Liverpool players and fans seemed to get very nervous at this point. If they couldn’t find a winning goal then City could open up a three-point gap on them.

Spurs played on the fact Liverpool seemed nervous and started creating a lot of good chances. They could have won the game through Sissoko. They counter-attacked and were 2 on 1 against Van Dijk. The Dutchman realised he would rather Sissoko had a shot that Son and blocked off any pass to the South-Korean. Sissoko took the chance and blazed it over the bar.

Liverpool’s breakthrough came in the 90th minute. Salah was at the back post and headed it across goal. Lloris should have caught the ball but it slipped out his hand. The oncoming Alderweireld couldn’t stop himself and hit the ball into the goal. Anfield erupted and Liverpool knew this title race was far from over.
