The USA put 13 past Thailand in the Women’s World Cup to record the biggest ever win in World Cup history!
The Women’s World Cup 2019 is currently taking place in France. There are 24 teams in the competition and the 2015 winner USA are the favourites to win it again. The USA is currently ranked the number one team in the world, with Germany just behind in second.
On Tuesday night the USA started the defence of their World Cup title against Thailand. This was always expected to be a routine match for the three times World Cup winners. Thailand is currently ranked 34th in the women’s world rankings and has only won one of their three previous World Cup matches.
The USA has many great players in their team. Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd are in the top six scorers ever for the national team. Carli Lloyd is also in the top ten for assists and appearances for her side. In comparison to the Thailand team, they have far more experience and quality.
The game
The USA got off to a great start and scored after four minutes but the goal got disallowed due to being offside. However, this didn’t discourage the USA. They had the majority of the ball with Thailand just clearing it at any chance. The world number one side didn’t take long to break the deadlock, Alex Morgan scored their first goal on the 12th minute.
The first half carried on in the same way with the USA just constantly attacking. By half time the score was 3-0 with Horan and Lavelle getting their names on the score sheet. This was still eight goals off the all-time record and four off USA’s own record of 7-0 against China in 1991.
The second half started and the USA was back in the goals by the 50th minute. Mewis getting her third. By the 56th minute, the USA was now 7-0 up and the record of 11-0 didn’t seem too far off. However, Thailand started to defend better and held their opponents off for 18 minutes.
The USA added another goal on the 74th minute and went on another rampage of goals. By the 92nd minute, the USA had broken the record and the hearts of Thailand fans as the score was 13-0. The scorers were:
Morgan (12′, 53′, 74′, 81′, 87′)
Lavelle (20′, 56′)
Horan (32′)
Mewis (50′, 54′)
Rapinoe (79′)
Pugh (84′)
Lloyd (90+2′)
This was to be the largest margin of victory ever recorded in a men’s or women’s world cup game. Thailand players were visibly upset by the full-time whistle. The USA team came under criticism after the game due to their celebrations for each goal. Many thought it was disrespectful to be overly happy when the result was never in doubt. Alex Morgan, who scored the pick of the goals, has defended her side saying it’s the biggest stage of them all, of course, they’re going to be happy.
The USA is now the favourites on Bet365 to go and win the tournament at 9/4. England is priced at 7/1 and have got off to a good start, beating Scotland in their opening game 2-1.
