10 Beautiful Own Goals

og

Recently we have seen a number of own goals including the above effort and it got me wondering is Sassuolo ‘keeper Andrea Consigli involved in an Italian match-fixing scam, but after that I started to think about other own goals that have been quickly frankly beauties. Here are some of the best I could find:

1. Scored by an unnamed Sunday League star

This was an effort that most Premier League stars would have been proud of, if it would have been scored in the right goal anyway.

Jamie Vardy may have risen from the non-league to become an England international, but I don’t think this lad should hold his breath on that phone call from Roy Hodgson. He may just be relieved that his name has not been well-publicised!

2. Kamarl Duncan of Thurrock Rovers

Another beauty from the lower leagues in England, as Kamarl Duncan’s attempt clearance against Romford in the Isthmian League catches on a gust on the wind caused by Storm Barney and beats his beats the ‘keeper.

To be fair to the lad his goalkeeper could probably have done far better with it. There are now unconfirmed rumours that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is scouting Duncan as a possible centre-back alternative to Chris Smalling.

3. Christoph Kramer of Monchengladbach

The German international midfielder attempted to play a back-pass to his ‘keeper. Unfortunately for the midfielder he did not notice his goalkeeper was well off his line and the result was a sumptuous lob of beautiful proportions from all of 45 yards.

4. Jonathan Silva of Boca Juniors

The Argentinian former-Sporting Lisbon star was attempting to clear a cross, when he brilliantly sliced the cross past his own ‘keeper to gift Tigres a 2-0 lead. The youngster is highly-rated, but he is unlikely to want any prospective suitors seeing that gaff.

5. Carlos Kameni of Malaga

Cameroon international Carlos Kameni is an experienced goalkeeper, so the above mistake is even more surprising, as he swivels his body and then palms the ball into his own net. It is fair to say this was not the best moment of the 32-year-old’s career. However, I have heard that Sassuolo are looking to sign him up this summer.

6. Marc ter-Stegen of Germany

Marc ter-Stegen is one of the most highly-rated young ‘keepers in the world game, but quite what he was thinking with that attempted dummy of the invisible man was is anybody’s guess. He is currently at Barcelona and being heavy linked with a summer move to Manchester City. The 23-year-old will no doubt not have relished watching that goal back again.

7. Mike van der Hoorn of Utrecht

His team were already trailing by three goals and it just got worse for the Dutch defender, as the ball came to him a few yards out and he slotted into his own net. It would have been a cool finish up the other end of the pitch. He was obviously trying to clear the ball away from danger instead he slotted home.

8. Carl Jenkinson of Arsenal

The full-back has not had much luck in his Arsenal career and has spent the past two season’s on-loan at West Ham. This was an absolute beauty of a lob from the full-back and he is unlikely to ever score a better goal at the right end.

However he is unlikely to look at it that way, as this could be the defining moment of his career at Arsenal.

9. Vincent Kompany of Manchester City

Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany is an accomplished footballer, but even the best make mistakes Vinnie and this was a massive clanger. The ball came across the area, there looked to be no danger until Kompany miss-hit the ball and it somehow found its way past the dive of Joe Hart and beyond the despairing efforts Gael Clichy on the line.

10. Jonathan Walters of Stoke

This game may have been the worse game any Premier League player has ever experienced. The Republic of Ireland forward not only scored an own goal, but two in the same game. The first one was an absolute beauty of a bullet header.

Walters also missed a penalty kick to round-off his nightmare appearance. Walters has been a superb professional down the years and I am sure he quickly forgot this experience, but I bet he still gets ribbing from his teammates about that fateful 90 minutes.
