Tottenham v Aston Villa
BETTING & MATCH PREVIEW
On Saturday evening, Tottenham host Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as both teams look to make a winning start to their Premier League campaigns.
Tottenham will have high hopes for the new campaign, as many believe the north Londoners to be the only team in with a realistic chance of getting near last season’s top-two Manchester City and Liverpool.
So far, Spurs have only signed one player in the transfer window, signing highly-rated young French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a club-record fee. However, he should make a big difference in the centre of the pitch. However, they are also close to signing Juventus forward Paulo Dybala and Giovani Lo Celso.
Tottenham actually finished last season poorly in the Premier League, winning just one of their last five top-flight games. However, they did have the distraction of their run to the Champions League final, plus a number of injury problems.
Their recent record on home soil in the Premier League is pretty good, as they have won six of their last nine matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs have won nine of their last ten meetings with Aston Villa and have suffered defeat just once in the last 17 outings against the Villans.
Aston Villa won promotion via the play-off last season. Since winning promotion, the club from the Midlands has been busy strengthening their squad, bringing in 12 players at last time of counting, including Brazilian striker Wesley and centre-back Tyrone Mings.
Villa have enjoyed a very encouraging pre-season after finishing last season in a strong manner. Smith’s team are unlikely to be easy opponents for the home side.
Tottenham have a number of problems heading into this clash. Heung Min-Son and Juan Forth miss out through suspension, while Dele Alli also looks set to miss out through injury. Eric Dier, Serge Aurier and Ben Davies are also fitness doubts. Ndombele should make his competitive Spurs debut.
Villa are likely to hand Premier League debuts to many of their new recruits. Goalkeeping duo Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland are fitness doubts as is defender Ezri Konsa and also winger Anwar El Ghazi.
