Southampton v Burnley – Betting & Match Preview

On Sunday Southampton host Burnley at St Marys Stadium in the Premier League, as the home side looks to extend their unbeaten run in the top-flight.

The Saints are now six games unbeaten in all competitions following last weekend’s goalless draw at champions Leicester City. The game was a tight affair, but the Saints at least managed to keep a clean sheet for a sixth consecutive game in all competitions.

Claude Puel’s side will be looking to move up the table. However, the team from the south coast need to be more dynamic in attack, having failed to find the net in consecutive matches.

Prior to those goalless draws, striker Charlie Austin had struck five times in his previous four appearances for the Saints and will hope to get back to scoring ways in this clash.

Burnley were highly unlucky to lose 1-0 at home against Arsenal last time out. The Gunners goal came with virtually the last kick of the game, as Arsenal centre-back, Laurent Koscielny appeared to have bundled the ball over the line with his arm.

It was a terrible blow to the Clarets, who have now won just two of their first seven games in the top-flight. If Southampton can find their attacking verve then this could be another difficult clash for Sean Dyche’s team.

Past Meetings and Facts

These two teams have only ever met twice in the Premier League and both teams have recorded a win apiece. The recent meetings between the two teams in all competitions have been relatively equal, with Southampton winning four times, Burnley winning three times and three games finishing in draws.

Southampton have won three out of the last four meetings between these two sides. Three of those four meetings have seen over 2.5 goals scored in them.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has faced Southampton five times in his managerial career, recording just one win and suffering four defeats.

Southampton are unbeaten in their last eight home games in the Premier League, recording five wins in the process. In fact, the Saints have suffered just one home league defeat in their last 13 outings. There has been under 2.5 goals scored in the Saints last three league outings at St Marys.

Stretching back to their previous stint in the top-flight Burnley have won just twice in their last 15 away games in the top-flight. The Clarets have suffered defeats in both of their away games in the Premier League this season.

Match Prediction

Both these teams have been involved in low-scoring games of late, so I cannot see this being a goal-fest. However, home advantage may count for something in this one and the Saints should have enough quality to record the win.

23/20 odds

Back Southampton and Under 2.5 Goals.
