Schalke v Monchengladbach

In what could be a pivotal game at the top of the Bundesliga table, Schalke host title-chasing Monchengladbach on Friday night at the Veltins Arena.

Schalke are currently only outside the Champions League spots in the Bundesliga courtesy of inferior goal difference to fourth-place Dortmund. Those lucrative top-four spots are certainly still a realistic aim for David Wagner’s team.

The home side went into the winter break in slightly inconsistent form, as they recorded just one win in their four games of 2019. In their last game of last year, Freiburg held them to a 2-2 draw at the Veltins.

Wagner’s team have been difficult to beat on home soil in the German top-flight of late, as they are currently eight league games undefeated on home soil in the Bundesliga. However, four of those home matches have finished in draws.

Monchengladbach are very much still in the title race, as the Foals are just two points behind league leaders, RB Leipzig. An inconsistent run of form at the end of 2019 cost them top spot, as they won just once in their last three games prior to the winter break. Last time out in the Bundesliga, Hertha Berlin held the visitors to a goalless draw.

One facet of their game that needs to improve if they want to win the title is their away record, as Marco Rose’s team has won just one of the last five matches on their travels in the Bundesliga, suffering three defeats in the process.

Team News

Schalke are without first-choice goalkeeper Alexander Nubel due to suspension, while Benjamin Stambouli, Salif Sane and Weston McKennie could all miss out due to injury.

Gladbach’s only likely absentee is youngster Torben Musel.

Match Prediction

This is a difficult one to call, but I believe that this game will finish all-square, which would do neither team’s chances of achieving their respective aims much good.
