Robert Green’s Broken Dream
England’s opening game in the 2010 World Cup was v their transatlantic cousins the USA. The two teams were favourites in the group and the significance of the match was known by both sides. In the ‘4 minute of the game Gerrard poked it in the American’s goal to open the scoring. The excitement for England was short lived as just before halftime Dempsy picked up the ball outside England’s box. After weaving left and right Dempsy fired out a poor effort at goal. It seeped past the English backline and Robert Green prepared himself to collect the ball.
What happened next was a shocking moment in the World Cup. The England no.1 palmed the ball towards his own goal. Despite his effort of crawling after his failed save, USA were now level and Dempsy got an unexpected goal to add to his tally. England never took off at the tournament in South Africa and eventually were defeated by Germany 4-1 in the Last 16.
