Netherlands v Northern Ireland

On Thursday night, the Netherlands host Northern Ireland in Group C of qualifying for Euro 2020, in what could be a massive game in the context of qualifying.

The Netherlands are currently third-place in the group, three points behind their second-place opponents and three points behind leaders Germany. However, the Oranje have a game in-hand on both teams due to their participation in the Nations League finals.

Ronald Koeman’s side has won three of their four qualifiers for next years European Championship. Last time out, the home side defeated Germany 4-2 on their own patch to avenge a 3-2 defeat in the reverse fixture.

The Netherlands have shown a good eye for goal in Group C, scoring at least twice in all four games, while scoring four times in three of their qualifiers.

Surprisingly, the Dutch have a poor recent home record in qualifiers, winning just one of the last five matches, while suffering three defeats in their last four outings on home soil.

Northern Ireland have continued to impress under the highly-rated Michael O’Neill. A 2-0 defeat in Germany last time out ended a four-game winning run for the visitors in qualifying. Despite the defeat, they are very much still in the qualification picture.

O’Neill’s side are unbeaten in four away games in qualifying for the European Championships, recording three wins in the process. They have also only failed to score in one of their last seven away qualifiers.

The Netherlands are expected to be without Stefan De Vrij due to injury. The likes of Kenny Tete, Donny van de Beek and Steven Bergwijn all continued to miss out on the squad.

Jamal Lewis has been ruled out of Northern Ireland’s upcoming Euro 2020 due to a knee injury.

Match Prediction

I am backing the Oranje to record a victory, but Northern Ireland will certainly not be an easy opponent, so it could be a tight contest.
