Monaco v Lyon
BETTING & MATCH PREVIEW
The French Ligue One campaign kicks on Friday night at the Stade Louis ll, as Monaco host Lyon.
The two teams enjoyed contrasting fortunes in the French top-flight last season. OL finished third place in the Ligue One table, while Monaco endured a nightmare, avoiding relegation by just three points.
Monaco’s pre-season results have been pretty positive and they were much-needed after a torrid end to last season’s campaign. The team from the principality will be looking to avoid a repeat of season 2018/19 and have brought in Portuguese winger Gelson Martins and goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to help their cause.
Monaco experienced mixed fortunes towards the end of last season on home soil. However, a record of just one win in their last five home matches needs improving if they are to progress in the new season.
Lyon finished last season in good form, producing a six-game unbeaten run towards the end of the campaign, including five wins. A key to that good end of season form was their firepower, as OL scored at least twice in their last six league games last season.
The visitors also finished last season with three straight away wins in Ligue One, having scored three goals in each of their wins on their travels.
However, despite that third-place finish, OL have lost star central midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and also influential French international forward Nabil Fekir. The pair will be big losses to Sylvinho’s team.
Monaco will likely head into this clash without the services of young forward Willem Geubbels, goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and experienced forward Stevan Jovetic all through injury. Both new signings could start.
Lyon have no injury problems and may feature some of their summer arrivals too.
