Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool v Manchester City

On Sunday, the two big heavyweights of the Premier League meet, as Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield in a potentially massive game in the race for the title.

Liverpool have won ten of their 11 Premier League games this season and are currently six points clear of second-place Manchester City. The Reds produced a dramatic recovery at Aston Villa to come from a goal behind to record a 2-1 win, with Sadio Mane scoring a stoppage-time winner.

This season’s good form is just a continuance of last season’s excellent form, as Jurgen Klopp’s team have won 19 of their last 20 games in the top-flight. The only team to beat Liverpool in the top-flight last season were City in January. That 2-1 loss remains the Reds last league defeat.

Liverpool have turned Anfield into a fortress again, as the Reds are now unbeaten in 43 Premier League games on home soil. Klopp’s team has also won their last 12 league games at Anfield, scoring at least two goals in all 12 wins.

Manchester City know that they cannot afford to lose this game, even at such an early stage of the league campaign. Pep Guardiola’s team heads into this game on the back of five league wins from their last six outings.

Like their hosts, the Citizens have been prolific in front of goal of late, scoring at least two goals in each of those five victories.

City have a very strong recent away record, having recorded wins in 11 of their last 12 league games on their travels. They have also scored at least two goals in nine of their last ten away games in the top-flight.

Liverpool will be without centre-back Joel Matip, with Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez competing to replace the Cameroon international. Xherdan Shaqiri is also a fitness doubt.

Manchester City are without defenders Aymeric Laporte and Oleksandr Zinchenko, as well as winger Leroy Sane and defensive midfielder Rodri through various injuries. Veteran midfield star David Silva is also a major fitness doubt.

Match Prediction

Liverpool have at times been scraping victories this season, while Manchester City have produced some really unconvincing displays. I can see the home team winning this clash and extending their lead at the top of the table.
