January Transfer News
In the Premier League, the transfer window brings a sense of speculation to the division which goes missing when the window is closed. There are hundreds of fake rumours and it is hard to filter through the nonsense to find genuine transfer talks. So, here is a couple of definite transfers, and some crazy potential deals which could surprise fans.
Jermaine Defoe – Rangers (Loan)
Except for his short-lived spell in the MLS, Jermaine Defoe has been playing in the Premier League since the turn of the century. Having scored 202 goals in 563 league appearances, it makes the striker one of the veterans in the division. The 36-year-old currently plays for Bournemouth but will be making a trip up North to join Rangers F.C. until the end of the season. Steven Gerrard who is only two years older than Jermaine signs his former England teammate in hope to bolster the side's attack. They are currently trailing Celtic in their league campaign but only behind on goal difference, which offers an explanation for Defoe's introduction. He is a player with great intelligence of the game and despite his age, he will for certain grab a handful of goals for Steven Gerrard.
Phillipe Coutinho – Manchester United (Rumoured)
For any Liverpool fans, your week amongst a near perfect season is only about to get worse. There are alleged talks between Barcelona and Manchester United regarding the Brazilian, Phillipe Coutinho. Since leaving Liverpool for Catalonia in 2017, his career has hit a stalemate due to a lack of involvement in first-team football. Since joining Barcelona, Coutinho has made 34 league appearances, scoring twelve goals in La Liga.
It may have come to a shock for the attacker that he would not carry the same persona in Barca as he did so in Merseyside. Whilst playing for Liverpool, he was a key player in the squad not just for his playmaking. In a Liverpool shirt, he scored 54 goals which ensured him as a Kop favourite. That title may evolve though if he is to join Ole Gunnar Solsjagaer's new look Manchester United team. This transfer is expected to cost around £170m.
Dominic Solanke – Bournemouth (Done Deal)
England under '20s World Cup winner Dominick Solanke makes a step in the right direction for first-team football in the Premier League. Having only scored one Premier League goal in his career, Eddie Howe raises a few eyebrows after spending £19m on the forward. Bournemouth boss stated ‘Dominic is technically gifted, very athletic and has the physical profile that will give us something different in our front line'. It is hard to judge this deal early on, however, Solanke has the ability, he just needs to find his feet early on in Bournemouth.
Eden Hazard – Real Madrid (Rumoured)
This rumour, in particular, has been morphing into a genuine transfer deal between Chelsea & Real Madrid. Newspapers tell us that Madrid is buying a new player every week but Hazard may well be joining the European Champions this transfer window. Real Madrid is desperate to fill a void on the left wing since Ronaldo departed last Summer. They have suffered a concerning start to their season and Hazard is bound to have a positive influence on the team's performances & results. One negative will be Madrid's bank statement if the transfer does go forward, we expect it to match if not exceed Neymar's transfer fee to PSG. Hazard is currently 7/1 to join Madrid with PaddyPower.
We still have the remainder of January for more transfers, who will be next on the speculation list…
