Huddersfield v Chelsea

On Saturday afternoon, Huddersfield hosts Chelsea at the John Smith’s Stadium, as both teams look to kick off their Premier League campaigns with victories.

Huddersfield beat off the threat of relegation last season, but face a tough test on the opening day of just their second ever Premier League campaign.

Despite avoiding relegation last season, the Terriers recorded just one win in their last ten top-flight games. However, David Wagner’s side did pull off two very creditable results towards the end of the season, drawing at both Manchester City and Chelsea.

Town’s home record at the end of last season was not great either, as Wagner’s side won just two of their last 11 games on home soil while losing three of their last four home games in the top-flight.

Chelsea appointed highly-rated Italian boss Maurizio Sarri as a replacement for Antonio Conte earlier this summer. Since Sarri appointment the Blues have brought in midfielder Jorginho and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Croatia international Mateo Kovacic while selling first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Blues ended last season in an unconvincing manner, which led to their final position of fifth-place under the aforementioned Conte.

The visitor’s away record towards the end of last season was just as unconvincing as their league form in general, as they won three and lost four of their last seven games on their travels in the Premier League. However, the new Chelsea regime will be hopeful of making a winning start in Yorkshire this weekend.

Team News

Huddersfield will be without midfielder Danny Williams through injury. Jonas Lossl, Terence Kongolo and Florent Hadergjonaj will all make their first appearances since completing permanent moves to Town. New signing Adama Diakhaby could make his debut.

Chelsea seems unlikely to field new signings Mateo Kovacic and Kepa, so Willy Caballero is expected to start for the Blues in goal. Youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi has impressed in pre-season and could start, depending on the fitness of Eden Hazard and Willian.

Match Prediction

Huddersfield will continue to be hard to beat this season, but I cannot see them troubling Chelsea in this one. I expect the Blues to record a victory in a low scoring encounter.
