The home advantage in football games is a massive factor in determining which team will win any given match. Just think of those Fortresses stadiums of Anfield, Old Trafford and Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.
In many cases it seems traveling teams have little hope whilst on the road. Below we take a look at some of the teams you can count on as ‘Home Bankers’. Including these teams in your acca can pay dividends over the long term.
Bayern Munich – Banker
Starting us off is German Super Giants, Bayern Munich. For decades players have quaked in their boots with just the thought of coming up against Bayern at the Allianz Arena. Don’t be fooled by the bright, colourful stadium which lights up red when Bayern take to the pitch, for away team players it a feeling of darkness.
This season alone Bayern have won 93% of their home games, almost a perfect record, except from a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg in December. Now Bayern are eighteen points clear at the top of the table with under half the season remaining, I can’t honestly see them dropping many more points at home with their current form.
Real Madrid – Beware!!
The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a Mecca for all football fans, just think of the great players who have played for Real Madrid, Ronaldo, Di Stefano and Puskás to name just a few. However, in recent seasons the Bernabéu has become a little less intimidating. ZIdane’s side have experienced a troubling league campaign, currently placing fourth in the La Liga behind city rivals Atletico.
Real Madrid have won half of their league games at home, which is poor for their exceptional standards. Away from home however, results have been better. Real Madrid have won ten away games this season, more than they have at home!
Picking Real Madrid as a ‘Home Banker’ on your acca could be a dangerous game this season.
PSG – Banker
Teams who are unfortunate enough to visit the Parc des Prince, know that is unlikely for them to take any points with them from the capital.
PSG have been the title holders of Ligue 1 since 2013 except for last season when they were runners up behind AS Monaco. They keep a consistent run of performance and results, which is what enables them to control the league as they do.
Since the beginning of the 17/18 season, Unai Emery’s men have won every single home game, the only team in Europe to do so. Which is why it looks inevitable for them to regain their title from domestic rivals at the end of the season. If the astonishing home record wasn't enough, their away results are solid, winning 16/21 in all competitions.
Manchester City – Banker
For the past twenty years Manchester has been a place to fear in football, mainly because of Old Trafford and the rich history that comes along with it. Since the rise of the ‘Noisy Neighbours’ the fear factor has only grown. Both City and United are perched right at the top of The Premier League, and it looks to stay that way for years to come.
Guardiola came to the Premier League and accomplished what critics said he couldn’t. Before joining from Bayern, people thought the competitive nature of English football would prove a step too far for Pep. Exactly what they said to Mancini when the Italian was in charge in 2012, the Etihad turned into a fortress and City went onto win their first League title since 1968.
So far, the blue side of Manchester have been superb, a class above the rest. Undefeated at home and only losing once on the road, their number one spot is thoroughly deserved and it doesn't look like they’ll be moving anytime soon. City at home is one of the safest home bankers in football at the moment.
