Bayern Munich v Hertha Berlin

On Friday night, Bayern Munich kick-off their Bundesliga title defence, as the Bavarians host Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern will be looking to make a strong start to the new Bundesliga campaign after poor starts to recent campaigns in the German top-flight. The reigning champions did end the season in a good fashion, though, as they finished the campaign with a 14-game unbeaten run to pip Dortmund to the title.

The champions record at the Allianz Arena was the key reason for their title win, as Bayern recorded 11 straight home wins in the German top-flight.

Niko Kovac’s side were deadly in front of goal towards the end of the campaign on home soil, scoring at least two goals in nine of their last 12 games of the campaign.

The Bavarians have lost the likes of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard and Ivan Perisic have all joined this summer, though.

Hertha Berlin finished 11th place in the Bundesliga after a highly inconsistent campaign. The club from the German capital enjoyed a mixed end to their league campaign, which put pay to any hopes of Hertha landing a European spot.

One concern towards the end of the campaign was their away form, as the visitors have won just one of their last six matches on their travels in the Bundesliga.

The biggest problem on their travels was poor defensive displays, as they conceded at least twice in four of their last five away matches in the league.

Hertha have strengthened their ranks with the signing of Dodi Lukebakio from Watford. The youngster scored ten goals for Fortuna Dusseldorf last season during a season-long loan spell.

Bayern have no reported injury problems. French World Cup-winning duo Hernandez and Pavard could make their debuts. However, it remains to be seen if Ivan Perisic starts as he has only recently joined the club.

Lukebakio looks certain to start for the visitors. Their only injury concern is youngster Julian Albrecht.

Match Prediction

Bayern have not convinced in pre-season and lost the Super Cup against Dortmund. However, I believed the champions will have enough to see off Hertha in a high-scoring game.
